I can expect the D to be slower to 60 in the pedal-to-the-metal mode, however with all that torque at low RPM it will feel more "powerful" in everyday driving as you won't need to rev the engine to get decent acceleration out of it. It is kind of similar to I4 vs V6, as in the V6 pulls with a light tap on the throttle while the I4 needs to be revved up to get the same acceleration.

Will be interesting to see the #'s.
99% sure we'll be buying a '17 CX5 this year.  Only question will be gas or diesel.
If the diesel won't do burnouts then forget it.    :P

I agree Weels. If the diesel is just slightly more fuel efficient but not a better performer than I would just choose the 2.5L petrol.

Mazda Motor Corporation announced at the Los Angeles Auto Show* that it will offer the SKYACTIV‑D 2.2 clean diesel engine in the all-new Mazda CX‑5 for North America from the second half of 2017.

Burnouts will be subject to having 50psi in those Hercules tyres, I'm pretty sure the Diesel can lay some rubber, should traction off switch be available  ;)
What I suppose can happen though is Mazda deciding to only offer D in the top trims so it will come at like 10k+ premium over their bread and butter trim level.

Like they did way back with the Grand Cherokee.  Diesel only available with top trim and every single options.  hopefully not.

That's still the case with the Grand Cherokee. No diesel for the volume Laredo and Limited models.

Chevy Colorado/ GMC Canyon is another case of limited diesel availability. At the price level they put it, diesel fuel savings don't offset the higher initial price premium for 100,000 or more kilometres.

It looks nice, but if the driving ergonomics are like the 2017 Mazda 3 and 6, it won't be fun driving stick shift in it. Your arm is basically on the cup holders. But seeing how the manual transmission is still relegated to the GX for 2017 like in all the previous years, it probably doesn't matter.

2016 and below, the armrest is ok for manual transmission. I'm sticking with my 2012 though with the armrest perfect for the stick shift.

Wonder if Mazda might offer the diesel in the mid trim GS
Would likely be priced at GT level

Like Subaru and the Forester's engine option.  Not an unusual sales ploy unfortunately.

TFL sneak peek.

He says "starts at 25k".   28k or so in Canada then for the fabric seats/ FWD?  :-\

In the video the Mazda rep told him that the engine in the CX9 will fit in the CX5.
That would be a great option.

Yup it would! But Mazda would have to make sure to offer this option and not cross the 40k barrier.

If they will still offer a FWD manual base model for under 25k, it will leave a lot of cash to find a salvaged CX-9 donor and get an engine swap done.  :skid:

..or it could be done with the current 2016.5 MY, perhaps, as the video says it's the same engine, only with a different tune.

The base model in the U.S. is now an automatic 2.5 whereas before it was a manual 2.0 so there base price went up by about $2k. Apparently Canada will still have a manual in the base model but I'm not sure if it will be a 2.0 or 2.5.

I love what Mazda did to the front end.  Looks very nice.
If I were looking for a new SUV this vehicle would probably be my number one choice.

With its gobs of torque this has me wondering what the diesel's tow rating will be.

I don't often utter the words "I'm keen to see what the diesel is like", but there you go, I just did.

Will also be interesting to see how it's priced. I'm guessing it will be AWD only, and probably not available in the base model.
