Long-Term Test Wrap-Up: 2013 Hyundai Genesis Coupe 2.0T
« on: November 16, 2012, 06:05:37 am »

We never got used to the Genesis Coupe's shifter, but we did like its fuel economy and surprisingly roomy interior.

Nice wrap up. Did you end up leaving the rear seatbacks up or down for all the gear?

"But this car’s stickshift fought me to the very end and had me wishing for the optional eight-speed automatic. The clunky shift mechanism feels like it belongs in a tractor"

Maybe Hyundai should go back to working with an aftermarket supplier for their shifter...B&M did a good job on the one in the Elantra Touring.  Not every M/T will have a Miata- or S2000-quality shifter, but this review is about the nastiest I've ever read regarding a (modern) M/T!

Perhaps it's all part of Hyundai's long-term plan to phase out M/T in their vehicles...offer terrible, terrible shifters so no one will buy them ???

There's another missing Hyunda from the list - the gasoline engine Sonata.  Only the Hybrid appears.  Our 2011 Sonata, owned since April 2010 has never gotten close to the advertised mileage.  It started the new generation of Hyundais and the claims of excellent mileage.  I've been frustrated so far with Hyundai Canada just saying it's not on the list and no real support so far from Natural Resources Canada to investigate why every other new model since is on the list (except the Genesis Coupe). :rofl2:

We drive our auto trans Sonata with the ECO light showing over 90% of the time.  No fast starts or hard acceleration.  Can't really think how we could drive it more efficiently.  I didn't say we get terrible mileage.  We just don't get near what was heavily advertised by Hyundai.  Overall we average between 10.5 and 11 litres /100kms through all seasons.  I think it should be better and I think Hyundai errer on this car as they admitted to doing on every car since except the sporty Genesis Coupe with turbo.

Is it the shifter that is bad or the clutch/throttle. I found on a lot of new cars with the electronic throttle have lousy clutch pedals. Very hard to be smooth.

It must be a combination of driving style or environment because our '11 Sonata has bettered it's 5.7 lp100 on many occasions.

10.5-11?

FWIW, when my wife drives my car, i notice the fuel economy reading is usually in the low 9s...i drive it, it's in the low 7s now (that it is cold out)...i don't pitter patter around, but my guess is she does a lot of gas/brake/gas/brake/gas/brake...i give it gas, and coast to the red light, stop...give it gas, cruise at the speed limit, coast to red light, brake...i don't know...i don't drive like a 90 year old man, and she doesn't drive like a speed demon, i think she is just heavier on the pedal than i am, which doesn't result in any faster driving, just using more gas.

I had a rental Sonata for a week in Southern California and averaged a bit less than 8 l/100 km with a family of five and a full trunk most of the time.
