I went for a long drive in the rental 2017 Ford Focus SE, 2.0 DCT auto, last night.  Over 30 miles with the cruise control set at 65 mph.

According the car's computer, fuel consumption was 46.6 mpg US, 5.0 L/100 km, 56.0 mpg Imp.  Impressive.

Rented one in AZ a few years ago. 2,500km through the deserts, long bits at 90 mph, ended up with 6.5 l/100 km. Frugal, and the best steering feel South of 50k$ - C&D praised it many times. The DCT is fine on open roads, less so around town.

Probably mentioned this before, can't recall...company car, 300 hp 'rental' Impala (2012??), 103 kmh, into a south wind, on winter fuel...6.8l/100.  I'm like, WTFFFFFFFF?  Tried my car, at 80 kmh, 1500 rpm (same as the Imp)...still couldn't get under 8l/100.  :'(  My car is nicer, but the Impala's not a bad car to drive.  Good power...hardly feel expansion joints.

Kind of like the Impala, for a good value vehicle.  Especially when it was redesigned in 2014 I think.  But hard to get as good a deal on the newer gen.  GM makes pretty fuel efficient V6 engines.

I did a 23 km trip today in my AWD sportwagen... cruise control 107 km/hr until the last 2 km downtown... 5.8 l/100km. Horsepower is largely irrelevant at those speeds.

So far my normal day-day usage is closer to 10l/100km though.

Back in my private sector days I drove a lot of rental cars, and the "undercover cop" Impalas were my favourite! Always got at least 8.5 l/100km out of the older 3.1 / 3.4 litre V6 engines. And everybody cleared the left lane for me  :popo:

That's why I would consider a white or dark grey Taurus as a used car purchase. Pair that with some black steelies and you're all set to intimidate people on the road.

Cross post from my show/shine threads on Smart ED and Tesla Model S.

$60 spent to drive 5000 km on my 2018 Smart ED since purchase.
Averaging 20 kWh/100 km at 6c/kWh (all in).

Tesla is slight cheaper to run than the Smart (per km driven) due to free supercharging on the routes we take. $200 to travel 18000 km as measured since installing Fleet Carma monitoring device last year.

Both cars nearly $1/100km real world, taxes in to fuel.

The cost of tire wear exceeds the "fuel" cost on the Tesla by a wide margin, about $3 per 100 km averaged out over life of the tires.

My previous Smart ED was the ultimate in low cost commuting, $3 in unplanned maintenance, $200 (cash) for tires in 4 years.

8.7 l/100km on the 401, 300 km trip to Ottawa in the RX
And it didn't cost $120,000
I don't think I will use $90,000 worth of gas over the lifetime driving the RX

In the VW Polo....

my daily commute is 30km, and it averages about 4,1 l/100km
Longer road trips (autobahn/autoroute) are in the mid to upper 5s depending how much I push the 3-cyl past 160.

So even with a 45 litre tank, the 3 cyl petrol is good for a range of approx 700km+

How long does it take for it to get to 160 with a 3 cyl engine?

When I drove the Suzuki Jimny with 80 BHP in Costa Rica, it would take forever to accelerate, and I think the top speed on that car is also below 160. Even my old V6 Accord Coupe would take a while to get there.

The only tank I filled up on that car returned about 7L per 100km, which is similar to the gas mileage I got with my 99 Corolla 5-speed(120 BHP). It's not great, but it's also a brick and Costa Rica is pretty hilly, so there is that.

I mentioned in my review.....the 3-cyl is tuned for torque and urban driving. Above 130 it loses its punch. It's got a fine top end, 197 km/h.

Don't really feel like getting in the car and driving to the autobahn to try it out, but 0-160 takes about 18-19 secs. 0-100 is 9,5s with the 7-speed DSG.

I just flat foot it when overtaking on two lane roads. Passing a semi tractor trailer yesterday on an uphill, in the rain, on a two-lane was interesting.  :shuffle:

That sounds familiar. I drove a VW Jetta with 1.4T when I got my RX-8 bumper fixed. It's got a peppy low end, which is great for city driving, but passing on the highway is a bit difficult.

From what I have read, the Jetta has a small single-scroll turbo, which makes the lag fairly minimal; the downside is that it runs out of boost towards the high end.

My RX-8 is pretty much the opposite; it's a slug at the low end, but get it above 4k and that's where the fun begins.

Almost did 500km (493.1km) from home to home road trip this week-end, with an opportunity partial recharge while at point "B", mostly cruising at highway speed (+) with A/C

Blended average show 4.57 L / 100 km (22.50 L / 493.1km) but in my book, the final score is 18.2 kWh / 100km (100.0 e-km) + 5.73 L / 100km (22.50 L / 393.1 km) after traction battery depleted, total cost 22.5L * $1.553/l = $35 + $2 (18.2 * $0.10/kWh +10% losses) =$37 / 500km: $7.40 / 100km

Still remainsd 195km in gas autonomy reserve once back at home (35L tank).

EDIT: Lifetime average went up from 2.46 to 2.48L / 100km  :o

I achieved 5,9 l/100km per the board computer on the mostly-autoroute drive between Luxembourg, Arlon, and Metz. Some country roads, a bit of urban driving, and mostly 130 on the freeways except in France where the grindingly slow 90 limit was painful. Not too bad for a boosted 4-cyl petrol though.

Then the long-haul drive, 324km from Thionville back to home in Germany netted 6,5 l/100km with the climatisation on most of the time. Drove mostly 130-140, with a couple extended sprints up to 170 on the "when will this boredom end" A6.

Did the drive from work to Strasbourg. Traffic was pleasantly good for a Friday afternoon, so I stayed on the A6 and A5 down to Kehl (DE) before crossing over. 221km journey, averaged 6,3 l/100km including some sustained higher speeds on the A5 (130-170 km/h).

Pretty good for a 205ch petrol motor that has short gearing. The final drive is something like 4,43 .
