to the comments regarding the "wife damage" being common... yeah, my wife (i assume like many) just does not care about cars at all. she was getting snow off her car the other day with a corn broom... and she got upset at ME for asking her not to touch my jeep with it.

she really just sees it as a piece of metal. lost resale value, repair costs, whatever... none of it seems to register with her. it's "just a car". since i bought it, i pay insurance/plates and such... i see it as more. (plus the fact that i see trade values and such daily).

just one of those things it's not worth me fighting... happy to not even fight that battle in order to win that way.
i used to be addicted to soap, but i'm clean now

She was distracted by her own mind.  I don't want to give her an opportunity to be distracted by her cellphone (at least she's good about that)!

The only thing I'd be willing to do is install radar sensors that beep if she's going to hit something.

to the comments regarding the "wife damage" being common...
Not that I think you were suggesting it, but just so we're all clear: this isn't me bashing my wife or women generally.  I think the world of my wife and she's been a fantastic driver (if a little more timid compared to my aggressive standards :P) without any incident previously.  She unfortunately had a lapse of judgment that resulted in an expensive repair, but nothing that cannot be repaired.

If anything, I actually give the neighbour some blame - his driveway was RIGHT there, and why he parked on the street, I'll never know.  I personally dislike parking on streets and would never leave my vehicles on our own street unless there was some pressing reason for me to do so.  If it was a wide street, perhaps a different story, but ours is quite narrow.  I'm still going to pay for 100% of the damage, and take no blame off my wife, but I dislike how many people on our street park there when their driveways are perfectly open.  There's just no reason for leaving your car on the road.

feel like i'm following you around in here trying to cover my ass! haha!

nah, i sure didn't mean it that way, just funny that a few of us had "wife" stories of small mishaps recently. just coincidence i'm sure.

... though my wife will admit she is an "ok" driver and just doesn't care regarding taking care of it.

Update:

::) the GM dealership gave him a "verbal" quote for $5,000.

Fix Auto gave a quote of $3,870 incl a rental car for 9 (yes, nine) days.

Sutton said it could be done in 1-2 days and $2,819.  All claim that the reinforcement bar on the driver's door was bent and thus the entire doors have to be replaced.  Seems completely bonkers to me, but if true, then it's straight to insurance.

The Fozzie was quoted at $1,411 and 1 day.

I don't have the quote for the Fozzie - wife has it.

Here's the quote for the Malibu:

#s 1-3 seem unnecessary to me...the front bumper cover?  The damage was nowhere near that.  The only thing that could make sense to me is if they have to remove the fender in order to remove the door skin, but that seems odd to me in any event.

No matter that, I don't know why they would have to "refinish" the fender.  I wonder if he had pre-existing damage he's trying to add on.

That makes up 2.3hrs of labour at $69/hr = $179 incl tax...so not really worth fighting over.

Looks like it'll be an insurance claim either way.  Joy.

:censor: happens.  At least I had the accident forgiveness program when I went through insurance 3-4 years ago.

Teach her to use her mirrors for backing in.

I have a shared driveway and sometimes I have, at most (depending on how DB next to me parks), 6 inches of clearance on either side of me.  It was even less than that with the Santa Fe.  Using the mirrors makes it so much easier to properly align the car.  You don't have that ease when parking nose-first.

I wish I were so coddled when I make mistakes.  Don't people own their :censor: anymore?  Suck it up, learn the lesson and work on mitigating a repeat of the error.  Simple.

Ugh.  Poor Subie.  I have to get the C30 fixed in the spring.  Someone backed into it on Christmas Eve 2014, and messed up the front bumper covering.  Thankfully, the headlight and headlight washer system escaped unharmed.  Thanks to being on disbility and then not being paid for 4 months, I had to put it off the repair. Once the snow is gone, I’ll swallow the deductable and get it fixed.
I'd rather be car-poor than house-poor...

Well, having married a long since former resident, I can confirm that there's a silver lining to the completion of residency.
That, my friend, is wonderful to hear.

So, I made the claim to the insurer.  My deductible (since I'm smart ;D) is only $500 and it's our first ever claim so the premiums remain unaffected.  Assuming we don't have any other at-fault incidents in the next 6 years, we're golden.  W00t?

Any way, thanks to all for letting me vent this out!

it might not be too bad...when my Rio5 was rearended a couple of years ago, I thought it was going to be really expensive...the repair cost was actually only about $2200...I thought it was actually quite cheap, compared to how it looked.

My wife has never damaged any of the cars, but my FIL has.  On occasions when he flew here, he borrowed my wife's car and did some damage.  Never occurred to him to pay for the repairs.  Just said "oops" and handed us back the keys.

Took the Fozzie in today for repairs as per the insurer's directions, but the bumper cover and protector both have to be ordered.  They offered that I could leave the car there (not sure why I would), so I took it to work and will bring it in when they say the parts are in.

Hilariously, when I got to the collision centre, there was a dead bird wedged between the front bumper cover and the plastic sheathing under the engine compartment.  *sigh* that was gross to wedge out with a piece of cardboard...
