Golf Thread
« on: May 21, 2018, 05:50:34 pm »
Searched for a golf thread & couldn't find one, so figured I'd start one. Although I suppose this post could have went in the "Little things that make you happy" thread.

Got out for 18 holes this morning (8:04am tee off), it was a bit chilly of a start & windy the hole round. Ended the round with a 93 (50 on the front, 43 on the back!) [emoji16] will gladly take that score all season long & even more so at the beginning of the season. Crushed a drive (for me) 275yds on one of the holes. Had 2 quads in there though, so there's room for improvement, ha, ha, ha!!

Man, do I ever miss golf.  I was an avid competitive golfer for most of my years but for the most part hung up my clubs the last 5 years or so.  Oddly enough, I dislocated my patella 3 times playing golf, since 2007, and each time I'm laid up for a few months.   So I just can't take the risk now.   I do have a custom made knee brace and golfed twice last year, but it scares me to push it as I wouldn't be able to work if I dislocated it again.  But man, do I ever miss playing.   :'(

^damn that sucks!! Golf has become a real passion for me over the last 5-6yrs & I would really hate not being able to play. I had an issue with my hip a couple of years ago & was doing physio for it as much as possible to continue my game. A buddy of mine asked me if I had to give up golf or skiing which would it be... my answer was "hockey", lol!!! I wish I took up the game earlier in life though, now that I play ~2 times a week my game has improved. And I will sign up for some more lessons this summer as that was a huge help for me.

Since my skiing injury golf is the only sport where I have actually improved.    Love it, but with two young kids it's tough to get out.

Gurgie, Monday or Thursday evenings generally work.. And the odd weekend morning.

Sigh, at least we managed to get skiing.

Back to golf, I have to get back into chipping golf balls in the back yard.  The one year I did it my feel around the greens improved dramatically.  Being able to up and down for a par, or even up and two putt for a bogey made a hell of a difference on my scorecard.

Weather has been mostly lousy here.  And whenever we can get out, it's been raining.

So we've mostly been doing range sessions.

IQ is looking really good.  Realistically her handicap will likely be 3-5 strokes better this year.  Which means she'll likely be beating me until her handicap catches up and levels out.

Love golfing with her.

How fast is my 911?  Supras sh*t on on me all the time...in reverse..with blown turbos  :( ...

My dad was a golf pro before I was born, so he got me swinging a club at a pretty young age. I worked at golf courses during the summer all through my teens and twenties.

I’ve got a good swing, and hit the odd good shot, but have never been a good golfer. Just never put the time into it, I guess. Working an 8-hour day at the course, the last thing I wanted to do after work was hang out another 4 1/2 hours (or more, God forbid  :P ) to play a round.

No desire to play now, but I do enjoy getting out to the range to hit a bucket or two when I can.

There's always weekends... I don't mind an early tee off, so you're home & back to the family before noon [emoji16]

Used to play a bunch.  Now maybe 2-3 times a year.

I played well. Maybe the best in a couple years but it will all come crashing down the next round most likely.  ::)
That's my fear for today, lol! Last week's league game I shot a 46 (9 holes), which is above average for me and I don't wanna come crashing down today [emoji53]

Dad is a very good golfer. I tried playing with him and he tried to teach me through highschool and university, but I just didn't have the interest nor temperament.
The last time I played a full round was in university, and I got pissed off in a bunker. Ended up hitting the old man on the back of his hand with the ball as he was holding the pin.
"Boy, this game isn't for you." I agreed, and never played again.

Can’t argue that.

Next time I'm down in the GTA & looking to get a round in, I'll have to bug you guys  ;)  Can play somewhere between Waterloo and Mississauga.

The friend we golf with is near scratch. His handicap was 4 last year. He NEVER practices, has never taken a lesson. I hate him for that.

But man...is so nice to golf with him to see how the game is supposed to be played. He's tall and lanky and can bomb it. He once hit my Adams V4 7 iron hybrid 192 yards!

FWIW, I did beat him twice last year and IQ beat us both by draining a 25 foot putt on the 18th at one outing.

This confirms my suspicion that you'd be the best dressed person on the golf course.

I always wanted to start something like this, but I thought most of the regulars weren't golfers.

Started 9 years ago and have been hooked ever since.  I probably played 30 rounds per year on average.

Lately, I've been using underpar to take a random day off during the week so I can play two rounds for ~$50.  The deal can't be beat if you can get two rounds in and not get too tired to the point that you lose concentration after 27 holes.

The key for me in not ruining the second 9 is staying hydrated and not being too concerned about the score from the first nine.
I've shot 84 last year at Osprey Valley (Hoot) and it was a sweet feeling after the round as I wasn't even trying to shot the lowest ever score.

Another notable memory for me is a hole-out from 90 yards for an eagle. That was my fourth eagle in 8 years of playing, but haven't had an ace yet.

If you haven't tried Osprey Valley in Caledon, ON, definitely give it a try when you're in the area next time.
