I dealt with the worse case scenario of importing just recently having my transmission replaced. It's currently in process at SOA for reimbursement. If for some reason there's a problem it will definitely taint the whole deal....but we'll see....I've been informed there will be no issue but I won't relax until I receive the cheque. I did have to pay up front (five grand), however.

And those situations are extremely rare.

Someone a few streets over picked up a fully loaded Accord EX-L V6 (without Navi) for $21K imported, all inclusive. It was a year old with 8000 miles. That car lists for just over $33K over here, plus PDE, admin, tax.
What you won't find in my car is a coffee, cigarette and a cell phone. What you will find is a driver; imagine that, a driver in a vehicle. What an effing concept!
A car has to do more than just perform; it has to stir your soul!
A true driver's car does not have cup holders.

Just curious what your experience was like when you imported your last new car from the US. How much money did you save..how hard or easy was it etc?

I haven't; never said I did.

But I did stop in at a large auto mall in NY state and looked at various makes. Not a single one would sell me a new car if I wanted to buy, but they could sell me a used car, even if it was a day old with 1 mile on it.
I found an Infiniti Dealer in NY tstae that would sell me a new Infiniti. The price was good too!

Not sure if you're talking to me......but I'll chime in anyway.

...but it was a piece of cake. I was at the border for no longer than 20 minutes. I saved close to 10K on my WRX. I gave Railton some advice over the phone and I believe it was a piece of cake for him as well...although you should ask him.

Saved $20K CAD. "Easy Peasy Lemon Squeezy".

So I wonder if he is in hot water from Nissan NA or if it is a dealer rule not to sell?

$20K...wow... :o

What percentage is that with respect to Canadian list?

Not really 20k, CAD list compared to demo with 4k on it. But still, a healthy discount.

So you TRIED to buy and import a car but were prevented from doing so?

Importing the car would be no issue if it is on the RIV list.

I wasn't in the market, so I guess you can say I didn't try to buy a car, but sales would not sell one to me when I asked.

Dealers vary in the US. Some just don't want the hassle from head office. Others are prepared to get a little creative in order to sell to Canadians. I have heard of one US Lexus dealer that was "selling" cars to a leasing company he owned and then that "non Lexus  dealer" was happy to sell "used" cars to Canadians.

The easy flip trick.
On top of that, the leasing company can charge above MSRP because it is technically a used car even if the Odometer is "0".
Hmmm, $1000 "I sell to friendly Canadian" fee  ;D

I had a dealer friend who shops in the US tell me about a dealer there that registers all the cars he wants to use a salesmen's demos or service loaners to his captive leasing co. When they get miled out he sells them to Canadians at or near new car pricing. Canadian buyer still gets a deal and the dealer solves the perennial problem of demos.

The NY Ford dealer would've gladly sold me their new 2010 Mustang...then again, it was grabber blue with white stripes and a honkin' badge that said 315 hp!!!

The chromed suspension arms were not allowed to be shipped to Canada.

I've already owned a Mustang. Reliability issues caused me to sell it 17 months after buying it new at the dealer.

Furthermore, 16 years newer technology, 45 extra HP and it finally has the same performance numbers.  ;) It took a while to catch up, I guess.

Friend of mine had a 924. Complete crap: garbage interior, electronic problems galore, anaemic engine. I never wasted my time looking at one since those days. ::)

Yes, how true, that is why Supras have decades of winning history. Funny how an M3 won the shootout with lots less HP in one of the magazines.

I wouldn't either. My neighbour feels the same way, but about GM. He never thought he could be converted...on his own.

Which makes it even more compelling a victory for the Supra IMO.  Porsche rich racing history doesn't always translate into great, winning street cars...
