Intact Insurance has an APP which you can you to track your driving. They say it can potentially save me 25% on my premium if my driving style is deemed safe and good. They are pushing this one me at every call.

Saving money interests me.  I suspect my driving style would be considered very safe. But the idea of being tracked makes me a bit nervous. Seems to me if they did not like your driving they could also drop you as a client.

They say I can save 25% but I suspect in reality there are few (if any) that ever see that kind of savings. I also wonder why they are pushing it so hard if in fact all it does is lower premiums?

Has anyone here signed up for this? What is your experience? Have you actually seen savings as a result?
If you want more in life you have to make an effort.

I suspect they are actually using it to rid themselves of anybody they deem higher risk. Intact has a pretty sleazy reputation. If you are insured with them pray you never have a write off claim. Intact had just bought out Royal when this happened and according to my broker they were on a major "change the corporate culture to match Intact's and cut payouts"  program.

I suspect it's a way to help them avoid payouts; if an incident occurs, even if it's not overtly your fault, they may be able to use the data to deny your claim, i.e you were speeding (similar) at the time.

In any serious accident that ends up in the courts (and/or big insurance payout)  the cars black box data will be analyzed anyhow.

If it was me, I'd want to see the policy and what is deemed "safe driving" and what the exact amount I would save.  I too think this is likely a way to catch bad drivers and either jack up their premiums or remove them.  Remember, this isn't something to save you money, but to save them money from claims.

But why give the insurance a preview to whether that's in their favor or not? Get wiped out on the highway by some douche while you happen to be doing 115km/h (slow by traffic flow in many areas) and if your data logger shows that, you'd better believe your insurance is going to challenge you. Let them do the work to access black box data....Or drive something so old it doesn't have any  ;D

Breaking speed limits, rolling stops and you are screwed. Soon we will just be mandated to a set speed limit anyhow.

Sounds like a lawyer's idea to deny claims..

You bet you it is although every policy has language saying you will obey the laws. Speeding is not obeying the law.  ;)

I dug in and found more to read on subject. While the agent only said I could save as much as 25% on my insurance what they did not say it can also cause rates to increase. So there is a definite lack of honesty and transparency. That alone is enough to make me stay away from this.

I am pretty pissed off about how it was presented to me talking only about the upside and not the risks.

It is pretty fishy and ambiguous.

No need to be pissed off, this is what they have always and will always do.  They don’t care about us or our assets, they said not want to maximize profits.  They are the scum of the earth, to expect anything more is foolish.

Most insurance companies are questionable and Intact is generally considered the bottom of the bunch. Enough said.

Has anyone here signed up for this?

My insurance company mentioned it when I renew. I can't remember how it all works, but if I have to download an App and I have no data on my phone unless I am connected to my home router, how do they track my driving?

What is your experience? Have you actually seen savings as a result?

Someone I know has it. They are retired and did save.
What you won't find in my car is a coffee, cigarette and a cell phone. What you will find is a driver; imagine that, a driver in a vehicle. What an effing concept!

A grandparent uses this; she's in her mid-80s and drives a 2018 Mercedes E 350 with maybe 11,000km on it. It does help, for that particular use case, in keeping rates down as low as possible.

For "enthusiasts" like us that enjoy our spirited drives every now and then, there is far more risk than any possibility of reward.

I would never subscribe to something like this, if it's coming from an insurance company you know it's not ment to help you

The entire concept is repulsive; asking to be monitored by a financial entity whose business model is to screw their customers at the drop of a hat.

People will sell their dignity for the equivalent of a monthly "Disney" subscription.  Only down hill from here folks!  :D

I imagine this will not be optional in the near future. Insurance valid only if you are obeying the law (already in your contract) so no more "spirited" drives.

What happens if your car is too old to install the tracking device... or you don't have a dat plan on your cell phone? My parents both have cell phones without data plans. They just use them for phone calls & texts. When on WiFi they use them for more.
