Tire storage stand
« on: May 24, 2017, 09:40:43 am »
Can Tire has a cheap tire stand on sale until tomorrow.
It's cheap and cheerful but does the job. Normally I stack my tires (205 55R16 on rims) in the corner of the car shed (kinda like a garage but without any door).  This coat rack keeps them up off the floor out of any water, without taking up any more room. It also doesn't require me to hang anything off the wall, which would probably make the structure fall down anyway.
Handy casters make it convenient for a passing thief to steal all four tires at once, so maybe lock the thing to something solid if you haven't got a locking door between you and the outside world.
'Cause you can only drive down Main St. so many times

Personally, I have this system in my garage:  https://www.costco.ca/Proslat-Complete-Wall-Bundle.product.100360498.html

Along with this tire rack:  https://www.costco.ca/Proslat-121.9-cm-(48-in.)-Wall-mount-Tire-Storage-Rack.product.10358539.html

Absolutely one of the best purchases I've ever made.  If you have a shed with wood studs this system can be installed without any problems.

Thats what I use in the garage. I mounted them high ehough so a 6'4" person can walk underneath. Only issue is getting the tires/wheels into the thing. ;D I use the bed of the ridgeline.

I read that tires should be stored flat, not standing up.  Is there any truth to that? I brought my winters down to the basement, flat and stacked in 2s, for now.

So when my brother bought his house, the previous owners had two racks in the garage for this purpose - it was listed as an exclusion in the purchase agreement.  My brother, the idiot that he was, offered $500 so the guy would leave the racks installed.  When I found out (months after they got the house), I quickly forwarded the link to CT to show how much such a rack costs.

In any event, the true regret for the racks isn't the money, but my brother has a HELLUVA time getting the tires/rims up/down (one car is a 2007 Mazda3 (16"); the other is a Sienna AWD (18")).  He uses a ladder and it's about as dangerous/crappy as you'd expect.

I stack the tires on the ground in the basement.  Carrying them upstairs sucks, but it's only done twice/year.

I designed and built an electric winch system which raises them up above the door, so they are out of the way.  This summer, I plan to add a rotation feature so that each week or two I can rotate them so they don't get flat spots.

Thinking of adding an automatic spray jet of an antioxidant protector, but haven't finalized the formula for the spray yet.

That Costco tire rack looks like one I built years ago, with four $8 studs and about $5 worth of lag bolts.

Standing up or piled 4 high; I've seen no issues.  Just make sure they have 50 psi.

You, sir, are welcome at my place any time to modernize it, but I'm not sure about the tire rotisserie ;D
