Could Porsche's Cayman S Outdo the 911?

From edmunds:

Could Porsche's Cayman S Outdo the Legend of 911?
Date Posted 09-27-2005

SIENA, Italy — Porsche's newest model, the Cayman S, will cost $58,900 when it reaches North America in mid-January. The company gave the media a full preview of it here this week.

The Cayman S fits between Porsche's midengined Boxster convertible and 911 sports car. But the Cayman S's size and characteristics position it closer to the 911 — some even suggest that in terms of road-holding and dynamics, the Cayman S surpasses the grand master (though many sports car fans would not dare to compare a rear-engined construction with a midengined one).

The Cayman S's six-cylinder, horizontally opposed powertrain is based on the 3.2-liter engine of the Boxster, combined with variable camshaft and valve management systems from the 911. That results in 295 braking horsepower, 251 pound-feet of torque and a maximum speed of 171 mph.

With its closed roof, the Cayman S has ample cargo space. The car can be kitted out with ceramic brakes, 19-inch wheels and electronic damping.
Cheaper versions will join the lineup in two years.

Mid engine theoretically has the advantage over rear engine in balance.  I think the cayman S is wicked but the price just doesn't make any sense.

Porsche has struggled to tune the suspension in the oversteering 911 since day one. Moving the engine to the proper side of the drive axle is the correct approach. Nostalgia aside, it is time to progress and move on.

It's ABOUT TIME.  The original 911 was about the same price as a Corvette.  Only the newest Z-06 even comes close to a 911 in price today.  Porsche bought into it's own "status" thing and just kept riasing the price of the 911 to ensure exclusivity.  The Cayman will be within reach of drivers.  Sure, it's NOT inexpensive, but it's "affordable" in a way the 911 hasn't been for 25 years.

Yeah but you can get a Z06 for the price of a Cayman now.  Sorry I think they still priced it wrong.  It shouldn't be more than the conv.

And what's with porsche's design team?  All their cars look the same from the dawn of time till now, no imagination to work out of the box.

That is 911's character and works amazingly. :o :o

I'm sure there's a limited market that will buy into the Cayman over the Z06.  There is something to be said of the "I drive a Porsche" mentality.  Given that the maximum speed limit in NA is about 120km/h, the Corvette doesn't present any real advantadge over the Cayman (in terms of power).

That said, I don't think it was a wise move on Porsche's part - the Cayman S should have been priced closer to the Boxster S.  I wonder where the Cayman ("cheaper model") will fall on the price scale...

I heard from some Porsche source that Cayman "base" will priced lower than Boxster S.

I would expect that also.  The base Cayman will have a lot less power and features than either S model.  The base Cayman probably slot itself between the base Boxster and Boxster S.  $60K or so?

Yeah. That makes a great track car for PCA track events. 8)

For $60k or so I would still buy a “regular” Corvette with 400 hp and equal handling abilities.

I was going to say the same Snowy ::) I'm sorry Porsche has become a poser car, I see so many auto's being sold now too.

Heck the new Z06 is close to Carrera GT performance!  Think about that.  The older ones are more saught after for a reason ;)

Hey, I didn't say they got it right, but at least they're on the right path.  I agree about the design.  The cars haven't changed much since 1964.  Personally, I'd rather have a 1963 356C than a 996-series 911.  More panache...

Why "were"? Isn't the 997 the current one?  ???
I'd go with the Porsche over the Corvette. Always wanted a Porsche. The corvette, though a very nice car, does not have the same halo for me.

996 is too civilized for hardcore Porschephils but it allows to expand into the grand touring market, in order to compete with SL and XK.
