Oh man that would sell VERY well here. Toyota is missing a subcompact CUV to compete with the HR-V, Crosstrek, Kona, etc. That stupid CH-R thing doesn't cut it especially with no AWD.

For sure. Looks a lot like the second gen Rav4, probably the same size:

I think that Yaris based CUV thingy looks a lot better and would probably be a better competitor to the other sub compact CUV's.

That was the pinnacle of RAV4 styling and you could still get it with a stick back then.

We were at the car show last year looking at Rav's and my wife happened to mention how much she loves her 2002 CRV, and hates to replace it.

The woman at the Toyota booth said, "I understand, I have over 500,000 km on my 2002 Rav4!"

The original Rav 4 was tiny, this isn't really that small, Isn't the current corolla a midsize now, according to EPA....So technically it's a mid size?

The Corolla hatch isn't that big, definitely not kid size.

I thought the CH-R could be had with AWD?

AWD or not, the CH-R is the ugliest thing Toyota produces.

I can't believe that haven't already addressed this market segment.  It'll sell in droves.

It's especially strange because Toyota was one of the first companies to sell a bunch of different SUVs. Way back in 2001 they were selling the RAV4, Highlander, 4Runner, Sequoia, and Land Cruiser. At the time that seemed excessive.

But how else are they going to lump sales numbers in with the regular Corolla?

i don't see it as a way of "cheating" the numbers...it's likely more to do with name recognition (everyone knows a Corolla is a Toyota) and they already own the Corolla name, so you avoid all the problems a new name can entail (registering copyright in various countries, names meaning different things in translation, etc).

I think it would have been better just to name it Toyota Matrix Would have given more people idea of what kind of vehicle it might be, without seeing it. where as, with the corolla, you think car....

that's another option, but only really for North America as the Matrix was only sold here.
