I hope this isn't a sign of things to come.
« on: July 29, 2011, 09:27:07 pm »
So...my new ML350 Bluetec is one month old today with about 3,000 kms on the clock. My daughter calls about 2 hours ago saying "Dad, the car made a funny noise and then the steering got really stiff". I drive 20km to where she is and find a shredded serpentine belt  >:(.

MB roadside assistance got a tow truck there in about 20 minutes and the ML is off to the dealership on a flatbed. Of course this is the start of a long weekend here so I don't think I'll see my car back before Tuesday. Being a holiday weekend I'm not even sure the sales side of the dealership will be open tomorrow so I can get a loaner.

I sure hope this is an isolated incident and not the start of    "SRX II...the Sequel"  ::)

Your roadside assistance includes a rental if the dealer is closed.  Call the 1-800 and they should take care of you.  We owned a very unreliable E300, so I know all about it...   ::)

While our car sucked, the customer service from MB was outstanding.  Use it.

Thanks John...that will be my second call in the AM if the dealer is taking tomorrow off to extend the holiday weekend (many do around here)

Likely belt was put on too tight, but it is a merc and at 3k that certainly sours the new car experience :(

Well, sales was open this AM so I'm in an '06 ML500 until at least Tuesday. :-\

Lots of power but the trip computer was showing 18.3l/100kms after the 10 km drive home through town.  :o

On the plus side this nearly six year old ML with 120,000 on the clock has tight steering and suspension and no squeaks or rattles so I hope that bodes well for my ML in the long term

Yikes, I certainly hope this isn't a sign of things to come.  Best of luck with everything and I hope it's simply an isolated incident.

Sorry to hear that man.  Hope this is the exception, not the rule.  The solid 6 year old ML gives hope.

I think it's you. First you shred a Cadillac and now a Benz. You must have bad car karma. Maybe you should have bought a Mitsubishi.  :)

Don't those things have automatic tensioners? Seems more likely that a pulley's misaligned or maybe the belt itself was defective.

Sorry to hear of that sailor.  Sucks when it happens at 3,000 km.   :(

I'm going to cross my fingers for you that it's an isolated incident.

I was thinking out of line pulley myself. I'll let everyone know what it turns out to be.

In the mean time I'm enjoying the V8 but Man!, am I ever glad I don't have to put gas in it on an ongoing basis. ::)

I haven't had an MB in for warranty service in a few years, but their service was second to none.  The dealers are paid full retail for the work, and they do whatever it takes to make it right.  There are no incentives to cut corners on warranty work.

When the transmission on my C-class calved, MB Canada could have done a minor repair (<$500) but instead noted that my trans was an early build and newer versions were much improved.  They authorized a complete replacement including torque converter and all related electronics.  The final bill was close to $8K.  When the bumper-bumper coverage ran out at 160K (they gave me a free extended warranty, but I won't go into it now) the car was virtually like new.  I took it in at 159K and the dealer replaced anything and everything that was even suspect.  Amazing.  The same was true for our lemon E300.  To MB's credit, they spent probably $15K trying to make the car right.

So, while I'm not a current MB owner, and might never be again thanks to some very poor experiences, one area where the brand truly kicks arse is in terms of warranty coverage.  Oh, and the roadside and trip interruption coverage is AMAZING.  One conk-out of our E300 involved them flying us home while the car was stranded waiting for parts, and then flying us out again to bring the car home. Covered hotel costs too.  They just made it happen, no fighting with them at all.

Hope it's not a sign of future happenings also.

Anecdotal story - my bosses 2 year old S550 let him down (as in stranded) three times on the hiway in less than 2 years. He complained bitterly to the local MB dealer, and they took it back from him on a trade for a newer, same model but AMGed. He loves the new one; but the trade up was not that good financially for him - he just wanted out of it, period. Not a great story really.

A few weeks ago I saw a white S-Class off the side of Hwy 97 with the hood up, couldn't tell if it was an S550 though. I wonder if it was him...

With gold at $1600+/oz I'm not sure I could afford the "Mr. T starter kit" and I think they're mandatory with a s'lade.  ;D..............and even if I could I don't own any white shoes or white belts.

Nope, his was grey. Crapped out once in the Rockies enroute to Calgary, once on the Coquillhala, and somewhere else. He was happy to be rid of that one.
