What an awful review format. They say everything yet nothing at all.

I kinda agree. I don't care about the numbers at all, they are all subjective anyways. Give me a good story and some detailed discussion of the vehicle, that is what I read a review for.
If driving an Alfa does not restore vitality to your soul, then just pass the hospital and park at the morgue to save everyone time.

Now drives a Jaaaaaaag...and thus will not pay for anything during an outing...but it is OK, because....I drive a Jaaaaaag.

I think many of the reviewers lack extensive mechanical/design/motorsports knowledge and have very little little creative writing ability.. Just. So. vanilla.. Sort of like 99% of what is reviewed...

Yup, except for Justin's used vehicle reviews the rest could be done away with entirely - especially for vehicles in excess of $100K. The rest is frankly, drivel.

Let the writers write. The variety in style and approach will be far more interesting to the reader than the fill-in-the-blank approach they are all forced into.
Wokeism is nothing more than the recognition and opposition of bigotry in all its forms.  Bigots are predictably triggered.

As I understand it, unlike the automotive geniuses who frequent the forum here, the majority of the views come from 'normal folk' who skim through reviews looking only for stuff like cargo space or fuel efficiency for any given vehicle they're contemplating buying.  There are diehard enthusiast sites out there and there are those aiming to offer helpful, digestible consumer information that doesn't use only obscure gear head terminology.  I'm not sure how extensive racing knowledge, or even much mechanical aptitude is of much use when reviewing minivans.

I remember years ago seeing all the hate here directed toward some of the reviews by one of the female contributors.  "She clearly doesn't know anything about cars!" when in fact, she's an excellent writer, mechanically experienced and an absolute diehard car fanatic with an extensive collection of classics.  The features and the first drives are where the really talented writers can flex their creativity.

Still, I bet the editors are always looking for more quality content, so for those able to offer better reviews, have at it, we can all look forward to those exciting compact SUV stories within the brand's format (that actually get views).  ;)

Meh, that's what the internet is for, to express displeasure over things.

But to better understand the motivation of the format may help alleviate some of the readers' discomfort?   ;D

Since my quality of life doesn't hinge on whether or not I am inspired by the reviews on AT, I have no opinion.  But comparing them to spreadsheets is truly offensive to spreadsheets.   :rofl2:

Glad my curiosity got me to come here. Being called a genius, with no cryptic intent, has made my day.

Actually I like the reviews that I don't have to read beyond the "spreadsheet", seeing as how I can only count to 10...  ::)

Fair point about the different readers of the reviews. But for those looking for not much more than an easily digestible brochure, couldn't a simple chart accompanying each review serve that purpose, without trying to turn the review INTO a chart?

I have no doubt Auto Trader knows better than I what best serves the broad interests of their readership. But as someone who enjoys good writing, I lament the constraints that this format imposes upon good writers.

I'm not criticizing the writers. I'm saying I want to read what they have to say in the way they want to say it.

I have previously commented on how I do not like the format.  I rarely read through an article these days.  That said, I can appreciate why the format exists especially given comments from Jeff.  If Autotrader data shows the existing format is more popular, then it's understandable.

How about more of a mix?  :)

This!  :rofl2:

Writing copy is hard. Making it creative, engaging, humourous even, multiple times a month is even harder. Let the writers be, they don't get out that often.  :P ;D

Because Autotrader is footing the bill for the forum, which obviously returns no benefit  :), hard to bad mouth the reviews despite a few being wickedly bad  ;D.

while i love the actual writing of a humourous or out of the box (literally) review, when i need to get info on a previous gen model or anything, charts and spreadsheets are what i need. so while a fun one might get read once when it's new and fresh, just pure info will get clicked for years when someone needs to know what options are on the 2018 touring model of ___ versus the EX.

this isn't about winning a Pulitzer, its about getting views/clicks for ad revenue and such.

totally get it and will be clicking both kinds of formats depending on what I'm looking for.

Jeff's exactly right about why we made the format change a few years ago. Having consistent headings allows for a reader to quickly skim a review and focus on only the aspects of a vehicle that are important to them – useful if someone is comparison shopping. In fact, part of the original plan was to allow two or three reviews be pulled up side by side for a point-by-point comparison. (That didn't happen for a variety of reasons, but as a result there was a push for smaller, more frequent comparison tests of popular models.) And the editorial direction to avoid technical jargon is also intended to make these reviews easy to understand for a general audience.

First drives are the counterbalance to this rigid structure; we just haven't had a lot of them over the past year or so (for reasons). There was also a budget crunch last year (for reasons) that severely restricted the types of story we could pursue, which is why the balance tipped heavily toward straightforward reviews. So even in instances where previously we would have run a first drive, we didn't know if a) the vehicle would make it to the press fleet, and b) we would have budget to cover it when it did.

With restrictions on public gatherings lifting, we'll see a shift in the balance of stories; once OEMs can run events as they're used to, writers will only have a few hours in a car, rather than a few days – it's enough for a solid first impression, but not enough to get a complete sense of its function in everyday life. The format for full reviews isn't changing, but you'll see writers being able to flex their writing muscles a bit more.

As for the 10/10 Power ratings... well, that's above my pay grade – I'm just the spreadsheet guy.

Not easy to write inspiring/interesting content every single time. The average consumer probably wants the spreadsheet form. There is more of them than die hard enthusiasts.

Andy is the man!! And his pure genius reply is very telling of the freedom we have as writers on scoring. Yes, we have to follow a format that is more consumer-friendly than car-guy poetic, but this forum allows everybody to further discuss the reviewed vehicles, sometimes with the authors directly to add some depth (or, in my case, English  ;D). Win-win.
