EV / Hybrid Fees
« on: February 22, 2024, 08:32:12 pm »
A few of us here have predicted this, first story I've seen of it happening. As I've said all along, Government is always going to get there's.

"KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) — Drivers of hybrids and electric vehicles in Tennessee are discovering an extra fee tacked on when they get their license plate tag renewed.

Beginning this year, the registration fee for electric vehicles is $200, and $100 for hybrid and hybrid plug- in vehicles. If you own a gas-powered car, there is no extra fee.

Well taxes from gas pay for road repairs and whatnot.

And EVs use those same roads, but don't "pay" for their maintenance via a tax like everyone else.

Now they are like everyone else...and have a tax.

How fast is my 911?  Supras sh*t on on me all the time...in reverse..with blown turbos  :( ...

I thought this was already a thing in certain provinces and states.

It is. Once the % of electrified vehicles climb in the mix, most jurisdictions will be heading into per driven km/miles fees to replace gas taxes. The only thing holding them back - much to the chagrin of the anti-car urban militias - is the cost of implementation. Tons of talk about that in my field (transportation/mobility).

Yup, and that will be fine when we get it.

I think you're mistaking anti car with anti car dependency.

Make it simple for them. NRCan uses an average figure of 20,000 km annually per vehicle, average fuel consumption is 9.0 liters/100km so that's 1800 liters of gasoline per year. Total taxes on a liter of 87 octane are about 60 cents/liter in Ontario as of now. So that is $1080 in foregone tax revenue. Gross that up by another 25%-50% because EVs are heavier and cause more wear and tear on roads. Round figure of $1500 per annum payable at registration should work out just fine :P for now. To be adjusted upward as the carbon tax keeps increasing ;D

We can use Trudeau math and at least double it every year for EV's because they will be the new prime cause of environmental destruction 😃

How about our insurance rates? EV’s are extremely expensive to fix and their weight surly inflicts more damage on people and other vehicles. I just know the insurance companies will be passing this cost onto everyone else.

So all those years we’ve been paying for FGC’s that cost a fortune to fix?  >:(

And you used them like the rest of us, now you have decided to drive something that tears up the roads worst than the rest of us so why shouldn't you pay more?

So there should also be an added tax for those who run studded tires?

Considering what I do for a living (Provincial tax auditor, specializing in fuel tax) I have been trying to get our province on board with some form of taxes that is fair.  Due to vehicles having yearly registration in NB, my suggestion is tracking yearly odometer readings when a car renews registration.

Using this data you can determine a proper amount of road tax based on distance and the weight of the vehicle.  But this data wouldn’t only be valuable for taxing electric vehicles, this data could be used for many things.  Tracking distances travelled in regions, this data can be used to help determine why certain areas have higher distances travelled.  This could help highlight places and regions that could benefit either from more access to necessities, new infrastructure, and to track trends.

But like everything government, getting new things developed and adopted is extremely hard and unless you can highlight a large revenue increase it’s not high on the priority list.

EV Stans LOVE to use the average fuel economy and average 20,000kms per year for all their arguments: about how much money they save, how much pollution, emissions, etc

But use the same stats to propose an EV road tax and they say HELL NO! LOL [emoji38]

I love EV Stan/Trudeau hypocrisy! LOL [emoji38]

People complain with $80 registration. $1500/year? They are going to lose it.  What do the cops say? Driving is a privilege.

Danielle Smith introduced $200 annual EV tax for pure EVs, nothing for hybrids or plug in hybrids. Says it will make up for fuel tax. You know, the $0 in fuel taxes Alberta collected in 2023 because of the price of oil.
