automakers have gotten the message that they’re facing a make-or-break moment. The industry is spending billions of euros to develop cleaner vehicles and counter the emergence of ride-sharing services like Uber Technologies Inc., which has a market value equivalent to Daimler, the inventor of the automobile.

Volkswagen ID.3.  They should bring this over instead.  ;)

Medium size battery and RWD (notice how fancy the rear suspension setup is) would be enough for my needs. I think they are not bringing the ID3 here because Europe's demand will outstrip the supply without a doubt. And I love how the pedals have the Play and Pause signs on them, no wonder the car will be a ton of fun with the centre of gravity so low.

Oct 2018 claim by VW :
https://electrek.co/2018/10/26/vw-ceo-electric-vehicle-tesla-half-price-2020/

Quote
VW boss Herbert Diess (translated from German):
“We will come in 2020 with vehicles that can do anything like Tesla and are cheaper by half.”

https://cleantechnica.com/2019/09/11/volkswagen-id-3-vs-nissan-leaf-hyundai-kona-ev-range-price-comparisons/

Looks like a base ID 3 is substantially cheaper than the base Tesla Model 3 SR+ (much quicker, with autopilot, more range).
Will be interesting to see what options mix will be on ID 3.

Paging Patrick. When are you starting taking deposits for the ID4 and what will it roughly cost?

https://www.greencarreports.com/news/1125179_vw-starting-battery-cell-production-in-germany-aiming-to-keep-know-how-there

$1B for 16 GWh battery factory in Europe.

Recall that Tesla GF1 was designed for 50 GWh at cost of $5B as of 2018 plan.
Ref:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gigafactory_1

As of today, Tesla + Panasonic have built out 1/3 of the original planned factory footprint, but achieving 34 GWh of output.

So this investment by VW is in the ball park and looks to be about the going rate needed for 300000 cars annually with 50 KWh each.

ID 4 shown in China. https://www.motor1.com/news/379820/2021-vw-id4-crossover-teaser/ well ok teased. Production to start late next yr?   Finally these guys are going after Tesla

https://ev-database.org/compare/newest-upcoming-electric-vehicle

It's promising. I just looked up the ID.3 pricing on this site and it's basically the same as the 62kWh Leaf but you get an 82kWh battery and much better performance. Hopefully the ID.4 that's coming here will be as competitive.

It looks good... But it doesn't really look like a VW.  Too swoopy.

it's you...it does not look like a SUV at all vs the concept.
If this is the final design, VW will have a hard time selling it in the US - it will be immediately identified as a Wagon and people will lose interest....

I honestly thought this was a Buick wagon when I first saw the pics online out of context...

Other views below - I like what I see so far! Appears smaller than the Mach-E, a good fit for our market. Plus - door handles.

And on top of that it will cost the same the Model Y and Mach-E?!

Oh VW is headed to disaster here...

Looks like the same recipe GM followed / let’s create a Model 3 competitor, develops Bolt, a Nissan Leaf competitor!

In case of ID.3 the battery is liquid cooled, which is a must-have if the car is driven past its warranty.
