Would you sell them?
« on: October 03, 2017, 04:44:40 pm »
So I bought new Blizzaks for the Highlander.  The General Altimaxes have 7/32 left, and given the mileage we put on the HL in the winter, no way I want to start out so close to the end of their life.

But, for someone, these might make a great, cheap alternative to not having winter tires, so I was thinking of not sending them to the recycling bin, but instead putting them on kijiji for a low price - $100 or even less for the set.

Think it's okay to sell a set of tires with only 2/32 or so real life remaining?

I think its fine as long as you disclose it.  Maybe keep a copy of the ad in case of future complaints.

Might be a good deal for someone with their own tire changing equipment (or access to)

I did the same thing years ago I basically thought somebody could use the black Steelie rims and wanted the old tires out of my garage. They were gone literally that day.

I was in the same boat a bunch of years ago with the Civic. Had some worn Toyo winters on 14” steel rims that I wanted to get rid of so I could go to 15” winters.

I think the tires were around 6-7/32” tread left, so basically done, but the rims were in good shape. I ended up selling them to a kid who showed up with nearly-bald all seasons on his car. He was thrilled that for a couple hundred bucks he’d be starting the winter with “good” tires.

I was up front about the tread wear, and he obviously saw it with his own eyes, but to most people 6-7/32” is still plenty of tread. And if you’re on a tight budget, and the alternative is to try to squeak through the winter on your shitty all-seasons, then I won’t argue. Even worn winters are better than no winters at all, IMO.

So, yeah, sell the tires cheap to someone who can use them.

^ This would be my view on it as well.

So I told the kid she can advertise them and sell them and then whatever we get, she can keep.  Should be a pretty easy $100 for her. We checked kijiji and that will be a very aggressive price for four winter tires with what should be a winters wear left on them if you're not logging the kind of mileage we do. I told her to ask $120 and take $100.

I'm not selling the wheels. They have new Blizzaks on them.

Hell, even someone doing a lease return might be interested in them.

For sure at $100 they won't last long.

Lease return or someone who needs to get a safety for a car they are selling, they won't last long for $100.
