I really, really like this...

Given the choice, would anyone pick the Tacoma Pro over this?
I love it when a plan comes together.

I prefer SUvs over pick ups as I like to have my gear inside, so the 4Runner is my choice over the Taco.

Except for the dismal fuel economy, I too love the 4Runner.

For absolutely no sound reason whatsoever, I want one.
And, definitely in that blue.

The front end is grotesque. The rest of it is fine, if a bit dated.
On some great and glorious day the plain folks of the land will reach their heart's desire at last, and the White House will be adorned by a downright moron.

I love the Toyota logo in the middle. Saw one in black on the 417 last week and had to clean up drool from my shirt.
I definitely want one, and I hope I can justify it when the time comes.

I like grotesque things I guess (don't tell my wife).

it's super dated... but that's fine. it isn't meant to be what's new and flashy... it just needs to have enough amenities to not be totally out of touch, while not breaking.

if I wanted an enclosed suv, this would be it... for me, I like the optional enclosure of the wrangler and it's shortcomings.

Fixed that for ya.

I'll take a pure driving experience over the electronic nannies, distracting touch screens and other unnecessary frills on today's cars thank you.

Air Liquide blue lol, you see their trucks everywhere! Love the 4runner too. Just seeing that manual shift 4x4 lever cements the fact that this thing is from another era, not a bad thing at all. Doug Demuro just did a test on one too, same blue too.

why even bother painting the front end? Just make the entire thing a grille already with two headlights at the corners. Done. Grotesque is right. The Japanese really are not on a roll when it comes to styling these days, too much space robot anime in the design rooms I think...

As for the mechanicals, I love that it is old fashioned. Plus, if you wanted to go to remote places and be sure your truck would get you back, this is probably the one to take. Tough as old boots.
If driving an Alfa does not restore vitality to your soul, then just pass the hospital and park at the morgue to save everyone time.

Now drives a Jaaaaaaag...and thus will not pay for anything during an outing...but it is OK, because....I drive a Jaaaaaag.

I'd have a hard time picking between this a Rubicon if I wanted a burly off-roader.  They are both capable (the Rubicon more-so, but either will go anywhere I want to) and both hold their value superbly - though the 4Runner might edge out even the Jeep on that count.

The 4Runner wins for comfort, interior space and longevity.

Very spot on review.  Probably a great vehicle for the Scottish Highlands.

While I really, really like this thing, me thinks of a combination of a TRD Pro Taco and an Unlimited Rubicon would be my choice garage.
Lighten up Francis.....

I never really paid too much attention to 4Runners.

A former coworker got one around the time I picked up my 2008 Outback. He told me in great detail of all the ways his loaded up 4Runner was better. Then one day his sunroof refused to close. During a thunderstorm. In front of our office building in Fredericton, and the gathered staff watching his futile efforts to keep the interior from getting swamped. He didn't really want to talk about his 4Runner after that.  ;D

He must have had a "Monday morning" build, because he did have a few other things go wrong. Nothing major from what I remember.

Pro Tacomas are sweet.  Even the non-pro is plenty capable right out of the box.  I would love to have a TRD Pro 4runner too.

The 4Runner has three advantages over the Tacoma.

1) Toyota has somewhat fixed the ridiculous seating position that plagues the Tacoma. Stoplights are still a little hard to see at times due to the low top of windshield.
2) The 4Runner has the old school 4.0L and not the uninspiring 3.5L that is put into the Tacoma
3) If you are really going to off road it the breakover angle angle on the Tacoma is rather long.

Tacoma has one main advantage.

1) It hauls dirtbikes in the back much easier. ;D

Now if Toyota would just put a nice 4.7 V8 in both ...

Wait...what?? They don't offer the V8 in the 4Runner anymore?!?!

Agree on these points. One additional point for the Tacoma, and which could also offset #2 above is:

2) Tacoma is available with a manual transmission, both the Sport & Pro
