Compressor noise from CrossTrek
« on: September 28, 2018, 03:19:53 pm »

Lady O said that the CrossTrek will periodically make a noise like a small tire inflation compressor when it's just sitting there with the engine off and key removed.

She called the Subaru dealer and they said it was a normal self test that ran every so many hours to check the fuel system or tank, she couldn't remember exactly.

I can't remember hearing it do that before, and I don't remember anyone mentioning a test like that.

Anyone able to expand on this?

On some great and glorious day the plain folks of the land will reach their heart's desire at last, and the White House will be adorned by a downright moron.

Does it have self leveling suspension or something?? Is it keyless start and is she forgetting to shut it all the way off??
Lighten up Francis.....

Evap system self test?

That's probably it.  Our Crosstrek did the same

^ Certainly sounds like the explanation. She sent me a video clip of the sound. It does sound like a tiny compressor running.

I can't remember ever hearing it. Maybe the schedule changes as it gets older. It's rolled over 100k. No unscheduled service, but a couple of recalls.

I knew someone would have the answer. Thanks.

yea, evap makes sense...i was thinking perhaps something with the fuel pump (i think that car is DI, right?)...just keeping the fuel lines primed with plenty of PSI or something.

^^ Yep, evap.  Our Lexus does this.  I first noticed it when i was working in the garage one night and didn't know what it was until i read through the manual.  Mine sounds like a little whirring motor,

I'm a bit late on this but,  it is definitely the evap system test.  Basically, what the computer is doing is running a little compressor that pressurizes the fuel tank with air.  It records that pressure, and then a little while later, records the pressure again.  If the pressure has dropped since it ran the compressor, it knows that there is an evap leak somewhere, and will throw up a CEL.

This is how the computer knows that you 'forgot' to tighten your gas gap when filling.

So neighbourette just texted me... Her new current-gen Crosstrek (2018 or 2019, low km with stick) is slated for an engine rebuild due to excessive oil consumption. Geez...

But, Subaru doesn't have an oil consumption problem...  ::)
