I’m back! This week, in a Toyota Tacoma 4×4 with TRD Sport package; this is Toyota’s mid-sized pickup truck option, which looks very similar in size to my one of neighbours’ older Toyota Tundra. Trucks seem to only get bigger and bigger over time: compared to my own full-size pickup truck, it is obvious the Tacoma is smaller, but for the average consumer that isn’t going to be using the truck as a “work” vehicle, one the size of the Tacoma may be a good fit.

Like most trucks, the Tacoma is available with many options, equipment levels and configurations. The 2010 Tacoma starts at a base price of $21,355 for a basic 4×2 model, powered by a 2.7-litre four cylinder engine and with an “Access Cab” body-style, which is basically a two door with smaller, rear-hinged doors at the back. My tester is a “Double Cab,” or four door with 4×4 and the optional five-speed automatic transmission and a 4.0-litre V6 engine, which immediately bumps the price to $31,845.
Add to that the TRD Sport Package at a cost of $5,110 and we have a base price almost double that of the starting cost, at $36,955. Equipped with the four-cylinder motor, the Tacoma is rated to tow only 3,500 lbs; move up to the V6 and that is bumped up to 5,000lbs. The TRD Sport Package adds a towing package which includes transmission and engine oil coolers as well as a factory Class-IV weight-distributing hitch and 7-pin wiring harness, all to increase the towing capacity to a respectable 6,500 lbs. Later in the week I’ll report on how well it handles towing duty!
Other notable features include: a 400-watt cargo bed power outlet, 17-inch aluminum alloy wheels, steering wheel audio controls and an integrated backup camera within the autodimming rearview mirror, which can be godsend when hooking up a trailer by yourself.
