You would think that a week in most test vehicles would provide your resident CD auto-scribes with enough information to provide the most concise of reviews. That’s what I thought too, as I passed on the keys of the 2009 Ford F-150 SuperCrew 4X4 to the next lucky contestant in these here parts. The number that kept nagging at me was “19”. No, it wasn’t that flash-in-the-pan 1980’s hit song of Vietnam War soundbites. It was my fuel consumption in litres per 100 kilometres, according to the Ford’s driver information display. With apologies to the current H1N1 global snafu, my first reaction was “Oink!”

With advancements in the 5.4-litre V8 mill, plus the 6-speed automatic transmission, my initial thoughts were that I had overstepped my throttle input boundaries along the way, especially with a Transport Canada (TC) rating of 15.7 L/100 km (18 MPG) City, and 11.3 L/100 km (25 MPG) Highway.

In most cases, the TC ratings that appear on the dealer sticker can be achieved, even if the testing procedures used by the Fed never see the open road. In reality, both City and Highway tests are simulated on a laboratory chassis dynamometer, with an array of adjustments keyed in to simulate such factors as aerodynamics and rolling resistance. Both tests are relatively short; the City cycle is a mere 12 kilometres, with the Highway cycle slightly higher, at 16 virtual kilometres. Speeds vary from 32 km/h to 97 km/h for the Highway cycle.
