Inside Story is a review of interior comfort features, cabin controls, storage options, trunk space and under-hood accessibility based on a seven-day evaluation.

Cruising range. Could there be anything more attractive in an SUV?

Sure, cupholders, cubbies, and infotainment systems are certainly high on the List of Want, but a fuel consumption meter hovering in the Ten’s and Eleven’s, as in litres per 100 kilometres, can cause even the most jaded auto scribe to speak in tongues. The Grail is Diesel, and a clean and tidy one at that, when it involves the AdBlue additive system on this Touareg 2 TDI Clean Diesel Highline tester, priced at $63,475. (Prices shown do not include freight, taxes, regional or promotional incentives.) There have been a few sniggles with Touareg features and observations in past reviews. Let’s see if the Vee-Dub camp is paying attention.

The Console/Centre Stack:

Gauges include charging amperage, engine coolant, and the diesel-specific oil temperature read-out. HVAC settings can be tailored for driver and passenger, with separate fan speed adjustment for each zone. Note the Max defrost switch, and the REST heating recirculation mode. The navigation screen is definitely a new benchmark for clarity, but the driver information display appears to be jockeying for best-in-class honours with the Navi screen. A trackwheel-aided system on the steering wheel makes short work of finding key information, as well as modifying driver preferences. It’s big. It’s bright. It’s right. Tip: ‘Help’ is the best command to utter for voice prompts. Like many VW and Audi products, engaging your Bluetooth search function on the phone first is the preferred handshake method.

The automatic shift provides a Manu-Matic gate on the console, with no steering wheel-mounted shift paddles. A simple High-Low dial for the transfer case uses a pop-up system, to ensure that no unwanted engagement of the low range occurs. The multi-function manual tilt/telescoping wheel sneaks a heated tab onto the backside of the right-hand spoke.

Headlamps are equipped with an Auto detent. The rear wiper appears to only possess intermittent sweep. The parking assistance sensors can be disabled as needed, just below the Navi screen.

The driver’s door pod houses Auto up/down windows for all, plus power fuel door release, and power hatch. The power-folding exterior mirror controls are in an excellent location, to the left of the shifter. While they are heated, the toasting must be switched manually by the driver. The exterior of the mirrors includes puddle lamps, and turn signal indicators.

Lets’ back up for a moment, with the rear camera view and plotting graphics, which can be adjusted for parallel parking.
