2009 Suzuki Grand Vitara
Grand? More like Grande, Mucho Grande, with a price point and equipment level that could incite Diablo-esque thoughts amongst competing cute ‘utes. Suzuki has always had a knack for exploitation savvy when it comes to their compact sport utility stable. Who else could have joked about point-and-flip Samurai’s and get away with it? The issue surrounding most cute ‘utes is their car-derived drivetrains: while most will never be used beyond car limitations, there is a certain contingent of the four-wheeling buying public that desires a transfer case, instead of a blank piece of trim.
This week’s tester is the Grand Vitara JX automatic, with the new 2.4-litre inline four cylinder mill. MSRP tips in at $27,995. (Price does not include freight, taxes, or regional incentives.)
When you consider that the JX Automatic 2.4 is the secondary bump from the manual tranny base Grand Vitara, one has to wonder if a colossal equipment level mistake has been made. Translation: there’s an awful lot here for the bread. The multi-function tilt wheel provides audio and cruise control tabs. Headlamps receive my favourite Auto setting.
