2013 Subaru Legacy

We recently drove the 2013 Subaru Legacy Sedan in 2.5i trim at an event hosted by Subaru at their head offices in Mississauga. Although the differences on paper and in pictures aren’t obvious at first glance, the Legacy has been significantly updated for 2013 along with its platform twin, the Subaru Outback, the crossover that also fills the role of Legacy ‘wagon’ in recent years. We have also covered the new EyeSight System at length in a separate review, an innovative safety system available only on the top trim Legacy.

The styling changes are subtle to say the least, with new ten-spoke wheels, fog lights, and the grille crossbar seems to extend into the headlights. Not exactly game-changing design, but the Legacy remains a classy if somewhat anonymous design in a segment whose bestsellers (Camry, Accord) also reflect the me-too tastes of mid-size sedan consumers (i.e. bland, inoffensive, safe).

Despite being slightly shorter in length and wheelbase compared to other popular mid-size sedans like the Toyota Camry, Hyundai Sonata, and Ford Fusion, the Legacy gives up very little in key interior space measurements like headroom, legroom and shoulder room. Its 415 L of trunk space is also a bit shy of said competitors, but my eyeball estimates judge it capable of multiple hockey bags or golf club bags. I don’t see it being a deal-breaker.

During our interior photography break, the rear seat offered plenty of space to maneuver and find a good angle for our full dash picture. The new cloth fabric was inoffensive, and interior plastics were unremarkable, but I don’t see these materials swaying prospective customers one way or the other, either.

Visually, I much preferred the metallic-look plastic trim inserts here than the Outback’s unconvincing imitation wood, lending the Legacy a modern, futuristic interior with a soft-touch dash and metallic plastic with streaky graining surrounding the centre stack and shifter on the centre console. The Legacy did not include the upgraded instrument clusters, but the analogue gauges were still clear and legible, and the stereo system easy to operate, with integrated Bluetooth even on base models.

Base models come equipped with power heated mirrors, heated front seats, Bluetoothphone and streaming audio connectivity, USB charging port, cruise control with steering wheel switches, a 60/40 split-folding rear seat, hill holder system, and an auto headlights. The electronic hill holder system holds the vehicle in place until the driver applies the throttle to pull away from a stop.

With the standard 2.5L four-cylinder ‘boxer’ engine and six-speed manual transmission, the cheapest Legacy you can get into is $23,495, $500 cheaper than 2012 models. Adding a CVT will cost you $1,300, totaling $24,795, in this case $400 cheaper than the 2012 model.

The Convenience Package, available only with the CVT, brings the price up to $25,995 and provides additional amenities like a 10-way power driver’s seat including power lumbar support adjustment, 16-inch aluminum alloy wheels, instrument panel storage bin, and interior ambient lighting. This trim is also available with a PZEV option (at $26,695) that reduces emissions to Partial Zero Emissions Vehicle, meaning at certain engine loads, the engine runs so clean that it qualifies for one of California’s cleanest emissions ratings, surpassed only by full electric vehicles.
