2010 Cadillac CTS Sport Wagon

Ottawa, Ontario – For decades, European luxury car makers have resisted fashion by offering wagon versions of their popular cars. Compared with sedans and SUVs the market for them is small, but apparently some of their customers think wagons are the way to travel, and so they are obliged.

Cadillac is a luxury maker, too; a resurgent one, at that. So in a strangely perverse kind of way, offering a Cadillac wagon kind of gets you back into the club, doesn’t it? How many people will buy one? Not too many, but if some of Cadillac’s customers think wagons are the way to travel, well they, too, are obliged.

Stepping up to fill the niche is the 2010 Cadillac CTS Sport Wagon. It’s pretty much the same size as the CTS sedan, but it doubles carrying capacity, offering 726 litres of space behind the rear seats and 1,642 of space with the rear seats folded down.

Two direct-injected engines are offered: a 3.0-litre V6 making 270 horsepower and a 3.6-litre V6 making 304 hp. As with the CTS sedan, both rear-wheel drive (RWD) and all-wheel drive (AWD) are available.

My test vehicle (designated “1SF”) is equipped with the larger engine and AWD. Its base price is $53,790, but the as-tested price is $60,505 due to the addition of an “ultraview” power sunroof ($1,660) special Blue Diamond Tricoat paint ($1,295), and a $3,660 PDW Performance Luxury Package that includes LED interior accent lighting, cargo net and shade, heated/ventilated front seats, power steering column adjustment, rear park assist, passive entry system with remote start, wood trim and wood steering wheel.

Standard 1SF equipment is very comprehensive and includes leather seating surfaces, automatic climate control, six-speed automatic transmission with “manual” setting, 18 x 8-inch painted aluminum wheels, Bose audio with satellite radio, Bluetooth connectivity and 40-GB hard disk, HID headlamps and tail lights, tinted glass, programmable power liftgate, sport tuned suspension, dual exhaust, limited slip differential and a performance braking system.

Safety equipment includes GM’s Stabilitrack electronic stability control with traction control, driver and front passenger dual frontal airbags, driver and front passenger seat mounted airbags, full length side curtain airbags, OnStar in-vehicle communication system (includes one-year of the “Directions and Connections” plan), and tire pressure monitor.

In short, the CTS Sport Wagon, especially with the additional PDW package, includes just about every amenity you can fit to a luxury car, and chances are, if it hasn’t been itemized above, this is only because the range of features is so extensive. However, if you don’t think the Directions and Connections OnStar plan is sufficient, you can specify a navigation system for an additional $2,885.

My test drive of this vehicle was somewhat unusual in that the distance I travelled was significant. Ottawa to Detroit and back; Ottawa to Montreal and back, plus local driving put close to 2,500 kilometres on the Cadillac. This enabled me to get a really good sense of what this car is like on the long haul.

The road conditions during my time with the Sport Wagon were clear on the highway, but snow/slush-packed in the city. On the highway, the vehicle was stable and comfortable; quiet, with good visibility to the front and sides, but limited visibility to the rear (small rear window, large rear pillars). The ride was agreeable throughout (not soft, but not too firm), and the handling sharp and responsive. The power tilt/telescoping steering column is a nice feature, but the steering wheel doesn’t adjust out far enough.
