2010 Acura ZDX

The latest addition to the Autos long-term test fleet is the 2010 Acura ZDX. In this introduction we’ll cover what it is, what we have and what it costs. Over the next ten months or so we’ll tell you what we think of this innovative new sport coupe from Acura.

Introduced at the 2009 New York auto show, the Acura ZDX received both enthusiastic applause and questionable looks from North American auto writers. It was a precursor to the reactions we get every day driving the provocative ZDX. Is it a coupe? A four-door hatchback? A crossover? An SUV? It is all those things and more. It is not only a completely new vehicle, it is a completely new concept.

The Acura ZDX is unlike any other vehicle on the market today – and treads warily into uncharted market territory – although comparisons to the BMW X6 are inevitable. But while the X6 feels like an X5 with sporty looks, the ZDX is more like a sports coupe with the visual presence of an SUV. However you see it – sports coupe, hatchback or SUV – reactions have been anything but ho-hum. This is a vehicle that grabs attention and elicits opinions like sushi served in a hockey arena. Love it or hate it people don’t hold back their thoughts.

But let’s get down to the details and the numbers. The Acura ZDX is a luxury vehicle and includes the kind of appointments and features you would expect from a car or utility vehicle with a starting price of $55,900. Standard equipment includes a powerful, all-aluminum V6 engine that produces 300 horsepower and 270 lb-ft of torque. Acura’s Super Handling All-Wheel Drive is standard, as are 19-inch, 7-spoke aluminum alloy wheels. Xenon High-Intensity Discharge (HID) headlights, headlight washers, variable intermittent windshield wipers, fog lights, power tailgate and a panoramic power sun roof are all standard.

The dark full length exterior roof glass that extends from the top of the windshield to the base of the tailgate contrasts nicely against our tester’s Palladium Metallic (silver) finish.

Safety features include anti-lock brakes with electronic brake distribution, active front seat head restraints, stability assist with traction control, dual-stage, dual-threshold front airbags, front side airbags, side curtain airbags with rollover sensor, tire pressure monitoring system and child proof rear door locks.

Inside, full leather seating is standard as well as a leather trimmed instrument panel and centre console. Both front and back seats are heated. The driver’s seat is 10-way power adjustable with two-way power lumbar support, while the passenger seat is 8-way power adjustable. Dual zone climate control, Bluetooth wireless mobile phone interface, power tilt and telescoping steering wheel, rearview mirror camera, two-position memory system linked from the key fob to the driver’s seat, steering column, side mirrors and climate control, and automatic day/night rearview mirror are all standard equipment.
