This week I finally get my turn in the Nissan Rogue that has been floating around the city for journalists to test — they left me for last; save the best for last as they say. As I was taking pictures of the Rogue and for once not freezing my fingers off as the weather has finally warmed up, I noticed that this new Rogue seems all grown up.

The first generation Rogue was a great seller, but it was never a looker with its jellybean shape and plain-Jane looks. The new 2014 Rogue looks more sophisticated. The larger size, the better-scaled proportions and the LED lights on the front make it look more expensive than it is.

The Rogue starts at a very reasonable $23,498 and comes standard with a ton of features — it is also available with a third row of seats for those that want to be able to have seven seats occupied. My tester is an SL model which starts a little higher at just over $30,000.

The SL adds a panoramic moonroof, heated front seats, intelligent key with push button start, 18-inch aluminum alloy wheels, dual-zone climate control an auto-dimming rear-view mirror and leather seats. Technically the SL also adds all-wheel drive as the S and SV models are available in front-wheel drive trim or all-wheel drive. The all-wheel drive package increases the cost by $2,000 on the lower trims.

Surprisingly the 2014 Rogue offers more standard features and more space for a lower base starting price over the 2014 model. Of course if you can live with the old model I’m sure Nissan will be clearing those out very soon if they are not already.

The compact SUV market is a hotly contested one in Canada with strong competition including our compact SUV comparison test winner the Mazda CX5.
