The more things change, the more they stay the same. That seems to be the theme with the new 2014 Mini Cooper. To the untrained eye this is just another Mini Cooper which has been around since the relaunch of the brand in 2001. Over the years Mini has made small changes that have updated the look and feel of the car while not disrupting the retro touches and design feel that Mini pretty much hit out of the ballpark on the first try.

Of course not everyone loved some of the odd school touches like the toggle switches and odd interior pieces, but enough of an audience seems to and they haven’t gone away just yet. This new 2014 Mini certainly is more refined than before and the interior feels less “strange” than it did back in 2001, that is for sure.

You also get a lot more car for your money now in 2014 – I was surprised by the base model price of just $20,900 for my tester and an out-the-door price of $26,225 after freight and options. My tester is equipped with the Loaded Package, which adds: auto-dimming interior mirror, sports seats, rain sensor with auto headlamps, automatic climate control, onboard computer and the Essentials Package, which includes the panoramic sunroof, heated front seats and fog lights (both front and rear).

A few stand alone options add to the appeal of my tester, but if one is looking for savings they certainly could be omitted – Mini does offer a lot of choice when it comes to personalizing your car.

The biggest changes for the Mini in 2014 are under the bonnet, which you do not see, but when you get behind the wheel you will most likely notice right away. My tester is equipped with the standard six-speed manual transmission mated to a three-cylinder 1.5L turbocharged engine.
