It has been a while since I’ve driven a minivan – or a mini-minivan. Of course in Canada we have only three real options in that category: the Mazda5, the Chevrolet Orlando and the subject of this week’s test, the all-new 2014 Kia Rondo.

Arguably the Kia Rondo isn’t much of a mini-minivan either as it does not have sliding doors like the Mazda or any other minivan for that matter. But it does have a similar shape and seats seven. For some that last factor is a must – although hopefully only in a pinch.

The Rondo starts life in LX trim with a starting pricing of $21,695 – of course as with most test vehicles my tester is the full spec EX Luxury with seven seats and an as-tested price of $34,160 after delivery and A/C tax.

What do you get for nearly $13,000 in extra cost for the luxury package? Well the Luxury package itself adds the following: upgraded 18-inch machined-finish alloy wheels, a panoramic sunroof, HID headlights, headlight washer nozzles, LED rear taillights, LCD/TFT supervision cluster, black headliner, premium audio system, navigation system cooled/ventilated driver seat, rear heated seats, electronic parking brake and front and rear parking warning system.

But of course that is not all as changing from the basic LX to EX models itself adds features such as leather, dual zone climate control, rain-sensing wipers, power folding mirrors, rear-view camera and much more.

MSRP as tested (including destination): $34,160
