What’s in a name? It seems like these days automotive manufacturers no longer seem to care. A name used to be a way to define a model or brand and to some it is nearly a religion. This week I’m behind the wheel of yet another newly named vehicle; the 2014 Acura RLX.

If you think you have it all figured out though you may be surprised. Heck even I, your automotive correspondent, was confused at first. First I confused RLX with RDX, Acura’s mid-sized SUV. Once I realized I was getting the RLX not the RDX I remembered that it was Acura’s top of the line luxury sedan with all-wheel drive… but wait that’s incorrect as well, confused yet?

The 2014 RLX replaces the outgoing RL model which was available only with SH-AWD, but this new RLX is available only as a front-wheel drive model – I can’t be the only one confused here.

But let’s move on. This new RLX is larger than the outgoing model, more luxurious, offers more features, is more powerful, more fuel efficient and less expensive! And if I do say so myself this new RLX is sexier as well.

The new 2014 RLX has a starting price of $49,990 and comes well equipped. Of course my tester is a loaded Elite model which contains all the features from the Tech model including blind spot detection and navigation as well as collision mitigation braking system (CMBS), LKAS (Lane Keep Assist System), adaptive cruise control and in-car audio designed by the legendary Krell Industries.

MSRP as tested (including destination): $64,285
