Oh joy, another hybrid to offset my own personal carbon footprint! This week I’m behind the wheel of a “sporty” hybrid: the all-new 2013 Jetta Turbo Hybrid by Volkswagen.

Volkswagen is a new competitor into the recent sea of hybrid vehicles and they have come along with a slightly different twist on the concept. The Jetta Turbo Hybrid is powered by a 1.4-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine as well as an electric motor.

Also different in the Jetta is the use of a dual-clutch automated manual transmission, or DSG in VW-speak, and they have upped the number of gears on their DSG offering from six to seven for this model.

My tester is the Highline trim, so as you would expect it is over $35,000 but loaded with goodies such as: heated leather seats, cruise control, automatic climate control, sunroof, navigation, back-up camera and more.

My initial impressions are favourable, right off the bat I could feel that this little engine with it’s turbocharging treatment does something that most Hybrids do not do well — offer excellent passing power at all times. We’ll see if this hybrid lives up to the hybrid fuel consumption expectations while delivering a little more oomph and fun.

MSRP as tested (including destination): $35,420
