Compact SUV contenders after testing at Canadian Car of the Year ‘Test Fest’, Shannonville Motor Sport Park

It’s Car of the Year time again! Automotive writers from all over Canada gathered for the annual “Testfest” at Shannonville Motor Sport Park near Belleville, Ontario last week to evaluate the latest 2002 models. As I’ve done over the past few years, I’ll be bringing you a category-by-category description of this year’s entries with price information, comparison performance results and other highlights of the event.

This year, you’ll have the opportunity to voice your opinion on your favourite 2002 vehicles. Beginning next Monday, you can cast a vote for your favourite entry on the BC Automobile Association web-site. There’s also an option to add any comments you might have about your choice. Come back each Monday to see the results of the web-site reader poll.

2002 Canadian Car of the Year

Organised by the Automobile Journalists Association of Canada (AJAC), the Canadian Car and Truck of the Year competition is a one-of-a-kind automobile awards program, that’s without-a-doubt the most democratic in the world. All road test members of AJAC (about 60) have an opportunity to come to the
event and drive all the vehicles entered on a back-to-back, same day, same conditions basis, prior to completing an evaluation ballot.

Only vehicles that are considered “new”, substantially altered from the previous year, can be entered for the Canadian Car and Truck of the Year. The evaluation ballots are weighted to reflect differences in price and performance, depending on the entry category. All ballots are confidential
and the collection box is sealed until the ballots are then tabulated by the international accounting firm KPMG.

Last year the Chrysler PT Cruiser (car) and Mazda Tribute (truck) were the overall winners. The PT Cruiser also captured the best design award and the best new technology award went to Honda for the hybrid drivetrain system that’s in the Honda Insight.

Toyota Canada is again the only major manufacturer not to enter vehicles in CCOY. The logic behind this decision is as baffling as ever, however, like last year I will endeavour to keep you posted on probable Toyota entries in each category.

Tune in to www.Autos.ca every Monday for the next five weeks for the low-down on what’s coming-down in 2002.
