The Golf Wagon fitted with VW’s excellent 2.0L turbocharged clean diesel is arguably one of the smartest places you can put your car-buying dollar. With more total load space than the old Passat Wagon, this fuel-sipping hauler goes down the road with surprising vigor thanks to the 236 lb-ft of torque on tap. It disguises its speed well, so best to keep your eye on the speedometer. Very refined, very comfortable and lots of fun to drive, the TDI Wagon’s eye-widening economy will knock the H-word (hybrid) right out of your head.
The TDI mill isn’t the only engine available for the Wagon. It also has the venerable 2.5L 5-cylinder as a base option.
The two engines can be had with four different transmission options:
– 2.5L 5-cylinder gas engine with 170 hp and 177 lb-ft of torque with either a 5-speed manual or 6-speed automatic.
– 2.0L 4-cylinder TDI turbodiesel with 140 hp and 236 lb-ft of torque mated to either a 6-speed manual or Volkswagen’s 6-speed DSG automatic.
In Trendline trim, features include 2.5: 5-cylinder engine, 5-speed manual transmission, 16-inch steel wheels, 60/40 split folding rear seat, 8-way manually adjustable front seats, 8-speaker AM/FM/CD audio with auxiliary input, black roof rails, cargo area cover, cargo tie down hooks, air conditioning. cruise control, airbags (front, front side, side curtain), exterior temperature display, front and rear map lights, front centre armrest storage, power heated side mirrors, and remote central locking.
Comfortline adds 16-inch allow wheels, chrome exterior window surrounds, engine block heater and fog lights (TDI), front and rear floor mats, chrome front grille accents, heated front seats, and leather wrapped steering wheel, shift knob, and hand brake lever.
Highline adds 2.0L 4-cylinder TDI engine, 6-speed manual transmission, 17-inch alloy wheels, Bluetooth phone connectivity, automatic dual-zone climate control, digital compass, power reclining driver’s seat, leather seating, leather wrapped multifunction steering wheel, MDI with iPod connectivity, mutlifunction trip computer, panoramic sunroof, Premium 8 audio (touch screen and 10 speakers), and satellite radio.
Sportline trim includes 2.5L 5-cylinder engine, 5-speed manual transmission, 18-inch alloy wheels, 80way manually adjustable sport seats, 60/40 split folding rear seat with armrest and pass-through, air conditioning, alloy pedals, black roof rails, Bluetooth mobile phone connectivity, chrome window surrounds, cruise control, airbags (front, front side, side curtain), front and rear floor mats, front centre armrest storage, fog lights, chrome front grille accents, heated front seats, keyless entry, push button start, leather wrapped multifunction steering wheel, shift knob, and handbrake lever, MDI with iPod connectivity, trip computer, panoramic sunroof, power heated side mirrors, Premium 8 audio (touch screen and 10 speakers), remote central locking, satellite radio, and sport suspension.
