NEW FOR 2016:

– All-new model.

When is a Toyota not a Toyota? When it’s actually a Mazda. That’s the case with the new 2016 Toyota Yaris Sedan. It’s a four-door sedan version of the Mazda2 – a model that Mazda hasn’t yet launched in Canada – with its own distinctive front-end styling. The Yaris Sedan is something of a Canadian exclusive as south of the border it is marketed as the Scion iA.

Though it’s a whopping 43 cm longer than the Yaris Hatchback, the Yaris Sedan is one of the most interesting small Toyotas in years. Utilizing Mazda’s steering and suspension, not to mention the brand’s SkyActiv technologies, the Yaris Sedan is a sharp handling, eager little subcompact. While the engine size remains similar to the Yaris Hatchback, on-road performance is improved thanks to a standard six-speed manual transmission. A six-speed automatic is offered as an option and also includes a sport mode. Despite a sky-high compression ratio of 12.0:1 and direct fuel injection, it’s not as fuel-efficient as the Yaris Hatch.

The interior is pure Mazda, which is far from a bad thing. Besides a more ergonomic cabin with a tilt and telescoping steering column, the design features a comprehensive instrument cluster, and an optional tablet-style touchscreen display audio system. Overall interior space is a step up from the Yaris hatchback thanks to a 60 mm longer wheelbase.

The Yaris Sedan is available in two trims: base and Premium.

Features include 16-inch steel wheels, air conditioning, keyless entry, power windows, power door locks, push-button start, heated power mirrors, body colour mirrors and door handles, dual vanity mirrors, tilt and telescoping steering column, carpeted floor mats, cargo net, digital clock, centre console, front passenger seatback pockets, six-way manually adjustable driver’s seat, four-way manually adjustable passenger seat, 60/40 split folding rear bench, and a four-speaker AM/FM stereo system with Bluetooth, USB, aux-in port, and steering wheel mounted audio controls.

Opting for the Premium trim adds standard six-speed automatic, 16-inch aluminum wheels, seven-inch display audio system with six speakers, reverse camera, cruise control, fog lights, and heated front seats.
