The all-wheel drive bandwagon continues this week, with the 2011 Subaru Legacy 2.5i. Launched as an all-new model in 2010, the 2011 model year adds some new features and options that improve the Legacy even further. First impressions are a little critical, though, as this new Legacy deviates from its roots considerably.

For 2010 the Legacy grew and became more mainstream, more spacious and a true alternative to the Cam/Cords of the world, with all-wheel drive as a standard feature at a very competitive price — but is it any good?

Instead of the fully-loaded models I have been tooling around in lately, my tester this week is a more modest offering: a base model Legacy 2.5i in standard trim. Although I enjoy the fully decked-out models, driving a base car gives me a better impression of how good it truly is, and it also shows that Subaru is proud enough to not feel that they have to impress with all the trimmings.

The base model comes well-enough equipped with all the standard features you would expect in the class: power windows and mirrors, cruise control, keyless entry, steering wheel-mounted audio controls, air conditioning and something not generally found in the competition — AWD and a six-speed manual transmission.

My tester is, sadly, equipped with the automatic transmission, a CVT with paddle shifters and six pre-determined shift points.
