This week, I’m behind the wheel of the polarizing Nissan Juke. Actually, in the “real world” it does not seem to be polarizing much at all; I guess I’ll see if the general public comment on the vehicle or not during my travels, but so far, those who’ve seen it think it looks pretty darned neat, including myself, even though I hated the photos that surfaced before its launch.

My tester is fairly loaded up: an SL AWD model with an optional navigation and leather package, which tops the price out to just just under $30,000 before freight and taxes. Certainly, a lot of coin for a fairly small vehicle, but it does pack a lot of features and the AWD factor helps make the pill a little easier to swallow.

Despite its shape and AWD, this vehicle is not really an “SUV” or “CUV.” From where I sit, this is a small car with slightly more ground clearance. From photos it may be hard to judge the Juke’s size, but parked next to our Toyota Yaris, well it isn’t much larger at all!

Powered by a 1.6-litre four-cylinder turbocharged, direct-injection engine, the Juke offers up fresh technology and 188hp, which is put to the ground through an Xtronic CVT transmission.

As previously mentioned, the SL AWD comes well-equipped, featuring such items as heated front seats, 17-inch aluminum alloy wheels, moonroof, power windows and door locks, cruise control, climate control, push button start and keyless entry, leather seating, navigation and Rockford Fosgate audio system. Standard safety includes advanced front airbags, side curtain airbags and active head restraints.

MSRP as tested (excluding destination): $29,248
