Changes are in trim for Mercedes’ big SL roadster for 2014. It picks up where the redesigned 2013 version left off, in three distinct trims, all based around big, powerful engines. The line starts with the SL 550, powered by a biturbo 4.6L V8 that makes 429 hp and 516 lb-ft of torque. From there, it’s all AMG, all the time: the SL 63 AMG gets a biturbo 5.5L V8 good for 530 hp and 557 lb-ft (or 557 hp/664 lb-ft with the option AMG performance package), and the SL 65 AMG uses a biturbo 6.0L V12 capable of 621 hp and 737 lb-ft.
All three are rear-drivers, and they share a seven-speed automatic transmission.
Standard kit in the SL 550 includes an AMG styling package, sport steering wheel with shift paddles, direct-select console-mounted gear lever, analog clock, leather seating, LED daytime running lights, active park assist, sport brakes with perforated front rotors, inscribed calipers and stainless steel pedals, active body control, panoramic vario-roof, Comand online navigation with MB apps, satellite radio, automatic climate control, adaptive highbeam assist, magic vision control, attention assist, pre-safe, 14-speaker/400-watt stereo, ambient lighting, electronic draft-stop, and run-flat tires.
SL 63 AMG trim brings AMG-specific trim pieces that include a twin-blade radiator grille, and lip spoiler, performance brakes, AMG-tuned active body control, AMG instrument cluster with race timer, Nappa leather-trimmed steering wheel with flattened top and bottom sections, sport seats with AMG badge embossed in the backrests, analog clock, illuminated stainless steel doorsill panels, velour floor mats, chrome key with AMG emblem, and a ‘dinamica’ roofliner.
The SL 65 AMG is the top of the range, and comes with Distronic plus, AMG performance media, active lane keeping and blind spot assist, soft-close doors, steering wheel trimmed in Nappa leather and alacantara, AMG drive-dynamic sport seats, chrome illuminated doorsills, Nappa leather roofliner, and a Bang & Olufsen stereo.
