Oh, finally! Something a little different, a little exciting — maybe a lot exciting? This week I’m piloting a 2010 Mazda MX-5, or, what I can’t stop calling a “Miata.” It’s painted in a striking colour that Mazda calls Competition Yellow that is more like Orange — I like it!

My tester is also equipped with the Power Retractable Hard Top (PRHT), making this MX-5 a true all-weather performer, in my books. The 2010 MX-5 starts at $28,995 in GX trim, while my tester bumps the price to $33,495 for the GS trim, which adds some very desirable features.

The GS trim adds: a six-speed manual transmission as standard, a limited slip differential (LSD), dynamic stability control (DSC), 17-inch alloy wheels, a strut tower bar for extra stiffness, sport suspension with Bilstein shocks and automatic climate control.

The MX-5 is no power house, powered by a four-cylinder 2.0-litre engine that outputs 168hp and 140lb-ft of torque, but the MX-5 has never been about big power. Instead, it’s about open-top motoring fun with a light weight chassis and its other claim to fame of being a reliable and fun summer vehicle.

The power retractable hardtop makes this vehicle a more attractive year-round vehicle. It does add $2,195 to the price but that is a reasonable cost for a powered hard top that will keep you dry in bad weather and keep the interior quieter than a cloth top during highway driving.

This should be a fun week; with a trip to Montreal scheduled, this little car will really get a workout in all types of driving situations.
