Looking for a Prius with more style, more luxury and a car that is, well, not a Prius? Perhaps you will not have to look any further, as the new-for-2011 Lexus CT 200h offers just that with what looks like all the underpinnings of the ever-so-reliable and thrifty Toyota Prius.

The first time I saw the new CT200h was in Detroit a few years ago when it was a concept vehicle with cameras for side mirrors, impossibly dark limo tint on the windows and a very cool metallic paint job. It was striking and promised to be “someone cool” in the Lexus line, so I was excited. I became a little less excited when I found out it wasn’t going to be the screamer the original concept seemed to hint at, but rather a hybrid model.

Fast forward to yesterday and I finally get to see one of these close up and in person. The dealership tells me they can’t get any for stock because of the devastation in Japan and that he hadn’t seen any, either. It is still a sharp-looking vehicle despite lacking the flash of the concept. Does it look like a Mazda3? Perhaps a little, but so does every other hatchback. To me, this vehicle looks more unique and sporty although the drivetrain itself is… not so sporty.

The CT200h is powered by the same 1.8-litre engine found in the Prius and the same electric motor, making a combined 134hp with power being delivered to the front wheels through a continuously variable transmission. Not sounding sporty, is it? But it looks the part, and first impressions of the interior and exterior detailing are very positive.

I look forward to another week in a hybrid, this time with some sporting intentions, perhaps.
