Down another size, but keeping in the hatchback family this week, with the all-new 2011 Kia Forte 5-door, a four-door hatchback built to compete with the likes of the Mazda3 and VW Golf. I’ve said it before, but I’ll say it again: hatchbacks are making a comeback big time, especially in Canada; perhaps our neighbours to the south are finally getting it, forcing manufacturers to cater to the hatchback segment.

My tester is an EX with sunroof model, the mid-level trim of the Forte5 line-up, which starts with LX and moves through LX Plus, EX, EX with sunroof, SX and SX luxury.

Available with either a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission, the Forte is also available with two engines, which are dictated by the model choice. A 2.0-litre powerplant is fitted to LX and EX trims, offering up 156hp and 144lb-ft of torque, and the SX trim bumps the motor up to a 2.4-litre four cylinder with 173hp and 163lb-ft of torque.

The LX model comes fairly well-equipped, with convenience and safety features most customers desire these days, such as six airbags, ABS, ESC, power windows and door locks, AM/FM/CD/MP3 with USB and AUX, Bluetooth hands free calling, steering wheel mounted audio controls and power heated outside mirrors.

The EX model adds 16-inch alloy wheels, air-conditioning, keyless entry, heated front seats, cruise control, telescopic steering wheel and a classy touch with turn signals integrated into the outside mirrors.
