I won’t be having any issues with trunk space in this week’s tester, the 2011 Infiniti QX56. Everything about this vehicle is super-sized: from the 22-inch wheels to the 5.6-litre, 400hp V8 engine to the price tag, there is nothing small here.

Starting with a base price of $73,000, the QX56 offers only one option, the $8,000 technology package, which my tester was fitted with, for an as-tested price of $81,000 before taxes, PDI and freight. I’m not sure who buys these monster luxury SUVs, but Infiniti only sold 98 of them last year and 130 so far this year (as of August).

But hey – if you like luxury and gadgets and you happen to need to tow something, the Infiniti QX56 could be just what you’re looking for. As far as luxury, this truck has it all: leather, heated and cooled seats, tons of power, comfort and isolation from noise. As far as gadgets go, how about navigation, lane departure warning, blind spot warning, distance control assist, forward collision warning and a 13-speaker Bose audio system?

I’m not sure if the QX56 is actually missing anything; it certainly has more gadgets than you could even bring to mind to list. The coolest of them is probably the surround camera system, which gives you cameras in the front, behind and on the sides. If you run into something while backing up with the help of this feature, you may want to visit your optometrist.

This should be an expensive week, with fuel consumption ratings of 10.3 L/100 km highway and 15.7 L/100 km city — nearly three times more thirsty than the Camry Hybrid I just stepped out of.
