I’ve heard lots of fuss about this week’s tester, the 2011 Hyundai Elantra, but I have purposely avoided reading about or checking out photos of it, as I wanted to formulate my own first impression upon seeing the vehicle in the flesh.

Well, today I got my first glimpse and needless to say, the hype is warranted. First impressions were positive; in fact I stepped into the car and exclaimed “Wow, this is nice!” And tha,t I am sure, is exactly what Hyundai hopes happens when customers walk into their dealerships.

My tester is an Elantra in Limited trim, which means it has all the goodies, including such luxuries as leather seating, heated seats both front and rear, dual-zone climate control, Bluetooth hands-free, cruise control, a power sunroof, 17-inch alloys… the list goes on and on.

The Elantra is powered by a 1.8-litre engine that offers up 148hp and 131-lb/ft of torque, and is mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission, still a rare configuration for a compact car. Safety comes in the form of six airbags, stability and traction control and four-wheel disc brakes with ABS and EBD.

So, what will all this kit set you back? I expected a rather large sum, but I nearly fell out of my chair when I saw the as-tested MSRP of only $22,699. First AND second impressions now positive. On paper, at least, this Elantra seems to me like a heck of a lot of car for the money, but will the honeymoon last the week? I guess I’ll find out!
