Compact SUVs are an odd beast, or category, if you will, of vehicle. What exactly is a compact SUV? It really is just a jacked up compact car right? Well, not in the case of the GMC Terrain, which seems rather large to me; I certainly would not classify it as compact but who am I to question the powers that be… whomever they are?

This week I’m in a nearly fully-loaded GMC Terrain, GM’s newest compact SUV, based off the also-new Chevrolet Equinox. The Equinox is styled more in the rounded genre while the Terrain attempts to appeal to the masculine side with a rugged exterior styling that is more truck-like.

My tester is an SLT model; if you are familiar with GM’s packaging nomenclature you will know this means fully loaded. I believe the only missing feature in my tester is navigation and I am driving a model equipped with the base engine, a 2.4-litre plant with 182hp and 172lb-ft of torque. Typically, in the past, the luxury models would always require an upgrade to a V6 engine, but many manufacturers are starting to see the light here and offering the smaller engine with the perks.

Equipped with all-wheel drive as well, my tester puts the power to the ground through a six-speed automatic transmission with manual shift capability.

Standard on the SLT Terrain are features such as: USB connectivity, Bluetooth, 17-inch aluminum wheels, eight-way power driver seat with lumbar, cruise control, climate control, traction control and stabilitrak (GM’s stability control system), rearview camera system and rear park assist.

In fact, all Terrains come standard with the rearview camera system — more on that later. My tester also has the optional entertainment system which includes two rear screens with wireless headphones. Also on my tester are 18-inch wheels, a trailer tow package and a cargo management system, bumping the as tested price to $38,805.
