I have been waiting awhile to get my hands on this new Ford Focus, and not only do I get to test one this week, but I get a full-jam Titanium hatchback with all the fixings. The new 2012 Focus is a complete overhaul from previous Focus models offered in North America, and brings us in line with the Focus available elsewhere in the world. In other words, we no longer get sloppy seconds!

The Focus now comes with a 2.0-litre inline four-cylinder engine with gasoline direct injection and a choice of either a five-speed manual transmission or a six-speed automatic transmission, which is actually a dual-clutch transmission similar to that used in the new Fiesta. The Focus hatchback starts at a reasonable $19,899, but as I’ll explain, the price can certainly climb up from there.

The Focus hatch is available in three trim levels: SE ($19,899), SEL ($22,399) and Titanium ($25,099). But as is typical with North American manufacturers, it doesn’t end there. Options are plenty — my tester actually has $5,560 in extras added to the base Titanium price tag!

A base Titanium hatchback is pretty feature-rich, with 17-inch aluminum wheels, cruise control, dual-zone climate control, MyFord Touch with 8-inch screen, heated seats, heated mirrors with puddle lamps and a 10-speaker stereo system being some of the highlights on top of the SEL and SE hatchback models. The Titanium model comes only with the six-speed automatic, unfortunately, so no rowing your own gears if you want the luxuries.

Added onto my tester are 18-inch wheels, leather seats, active park assist (yes, my tester can park itself), an interior trim package that adds funky white leather trim, navigation and a power moonroof. In Ontario, the final out-the-door price is $36,486… ouchies.

MSRP as tested (excluding destination): $30,659
