Last week, the Toyota Tacoma was the small truck in my driveway, but this week, my Nissan Titan is the little guy as I take Ford’s new 2011 SuperDuty F-350 Diesel for a spin. Equipped with Ford’s all new 6.7-litre Power Stroke V-8 turbocharged diesel engine, this is a monster-sized truck with all the numbers to back it up.

Towing capacity is rated at 11,068 kg (24,400 pounds) and with a payload capacity of 2,958 kg (6,520 pounds) my Titan could literally be hauled around in the F-350’s bed… if it fit. The Power Stroke diesel has the numbers as well, including 735ft-lbs of torque at 1,600rpm and 390hp at 2,800rpm put to the ground through the rear wheels or through all four in 4×4 mode.

Power is transferred to the wheels through Ford’s all-new TorqShift six-speed automatic transmission that was designed to manage the big low-end torque produced by the new diesel engine. This new transmission also enables the first application of Live Drive PTO (Power Take Off) in a Super Duty-class vehicle. On the 2011 Super Duty diesels with that option, the PTO output gear is linked through the torque converter to the engine crankshaft, allowing the transmission to power auxiliary equipment such as snowplows, tow truck lifts etc.

All this great stuff does not come cheaply, though. My tester starts at $57,899 but add the diesel engine and the price jumps by $9,950. Add on top luxuries such as leather, 20-inch wheels, satellite radio and navigation with rear view camera and the price climbs quickly.

Other options on my tester include: stepgate, bed extender, upfitter switches, the aformentioned Power Take-Off provision on the transmission, 3.55:1 electronic locking axle, PTC supplemental heater and a heavy duty alternator for an as tested price of $75,809.
