From small and fuel efficient last week to the not-so-small this week, but hopefully somewhat fuel efficient for its size, the 2012 Chevrolet Traverse LT AWD. The Traverse is Chevrolet’s version of the 7/8-seater GM crossover triplets, the others being the GMC Acadia and Buick Enclave.

Originally released in 2007 with the introduction of the Acadia, these vehicles have undergone minor modifications year over year with a more powerful engine and transmission overhaul in 2009 when the Traverse was added to the lineup, replacing the now-defunct Saturn Outlook. These crossovers were meant to replace GM’s aging Uplander minivan and Trailblazer SUV.

My tester is an AWD 2LT model with some optional extras, such as a rear DVD entertainment system, panoramic sunroof and backup camera. All Traverse models are equipped with a 3.6-litre V6 engine mated to a six-speed automatic transmission with power output rated at 281hp (single-exhaust) or 288hp with the available dual exhaust).

Standard equipment on the 2LT includes 18-inch aluminum wheels, mirrors with integrated turn signals and driver’s side auto-dimming, tri-zone automatic climate control with second- and third-row controls, power liftgate, remote starter, Bluetooth connectivity, garage door opener, rear-seat audio with headphone jacks and controls, Bose premium ten-speaker audio system, and second-row Smart Slide 40/40 captain’s chairs.

2012 Chevrolet Traverse
MSRP as tested (excluding destination): $53,310
