Now for something a little different from “the General”, General Motors that is, and more specifically Chevrolet – the all-new 2011 Chevrolet Cruze LT Turbo. With a starting price of just $14,995, the all new Chevrolet Cruze aims to change the way Canadians look at compact cars.

The Cruze is new to Canada but not new in the global market. The Cruze is sold in over 60 countries around the globe and is very important to GM’s success in Canada. Cruze plans to battle it out the big guns, the Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla and Mazda3.

My tester is an LT model with an MSRP of $19,495 and adds only a few options to a rather impressive list of standard features for the compact car segment. These include air conditioning, a six-speed automatic transmission, cruise control, 10 airbags, electronic stability control, traction control, power one-touch down on all windows and a 1.4-litre turbocharged engine with 138hp and 148lb/ft of torque.

My tester is a 1SB package which adds $1,375 to the bottom line and includes GM’s connectivity package with Bluetooth; OnStar and USB connectivity, 16″ alloy wheels, and a leather wrapped steering wheel.

I did have a chance to drive the Cruze briefly at this year’s AJAC CCOTY event where the Cruze won it’s class as the best new small car over $21,000 and I came away impressed but not blown away. We’ll see how the Cruze fairs during my weekly grind day. More seat time is needed to ensure a fair evaluation of GM’s newest compact car entry into our marketplace.
