Back to an SUV for this week, after driving that Chrysler Town & Country for two weeks. I didn’t think I would ever be glad to be in a “compact” SUV, but a few minutes behind the wheel of the 2010 Chevrolet Equinox and it downright feels like a sports car compared to the minivan I just stepped out of.

The Chevrolet Equinox is the fraternal twin of the GMC Terrain I drove just a few short weeks ago and only a few minutes behind the wheel reminded me of both the good and the bad about this platform. I had a fairly loaded all-wheel drive Terrain, but my Equinox tester is close to a base model with just the 1LT package upgrade and a front-wheel drive layout.

The Chevrolet Equinox comes standard with a 2.4L four-cylinder engine that produces 182hp, which is mated to shiftable six-speed automatic transmission which is also standard. Other standard features include: StabiliTrak (GM’s stability control system), ABS with traction control, side air bags, curtain air bags, air conditioning, cruise control, power windows/mirros and doors locks, remote keyless entry, auto headlamps and a power drive height and lumbar adjustment.

The 1LT package adds on: charcoal roof rails, body coloured heated mirrors, premium cloth, automatic climate control, deep tinted glass, fog lamps, compass, floor mats and a block heater. All this adds $1,800 to the base price of $25,995 and all models are available with for $1610.
