I had a a few days off last week and was relegated to driving my own vehicle, but this week I’m back, and in yet another BMW. This week’s BMW is the X5 SAV (Sport Activity Vehicle).

My test model is a xDrive50i, which means that it is all-wheel drive equipped (like all X5s) and powered by a 5.0-litre engine … or not. BMW’s numbering scheme is a little odd: a BMW enthusiast told me they like to round up so he assumed it was a 4.8-litre engine, but double checking the specs it’s actually a 4.4-litre engine — say what?

To my surprise, it is also twin-turbocharged, which explains the rocketship feeling upon acceleration — 400hp and 450lb/ft of torque will do that.

All this power is transferred down to the all-wheel drive system through BMW’s new 8-speed automatic transmission, which provides two overdrive gears for cruising.

The BMW X5 starts at $62,800; the 5.0i version that I am driving has a starting price of $74,300 but options on my tester bring that up to a staggering as-tested price of $90,400.

Some of the added features include: navigation, Audiophile sound package and 20-inch M alloy wheels.
