Sunday was both Father’s Day and the first day of summer, and did summer ever hit us hard, with temps above 30 degrees the past few days in Ottawa. I’m not complaining; on the contrary, I’m taking in all the sun I can get with lunch hour walks around the campus at work and top-down motoring on the way home!

That’s right, this car could not have come at a better time: the 2009 BMW Z4 has hit my driveway just in time for the official launch of summer in the capital, and so far I am enjoying every minute of it.

I’m not sure it could have came with much better specifications, either, without going completely overboard. The sDrive35i model I will be sporting this week is painted black Sapphire metallic suite with an interior lined in Coral Red extended Kansas leather. I’m not sure exactly what Kansas leather, is but it looks great.

Starting at a base price of $61,900, my tester adds the Sport Package and Executive Package to come in just under 70 grand, at $69,100, before taxes freight and pdi.

The most important part of a roadster, though is the engine, and this one goes with gusto thanks to BMW’s 3.0-litre, twin-turbocharged inline six engine, outputting 300hp and 300lb-ft of torque. And it powers the proper wheels — the rear ones — through a proper six-speed manual. It doesn’t get much more “roadster” than this.
