The 7-Series is the biggest and most luxurious sedan in the BMW lineup. New for 2013 is an entry-level 740L xDrive edition, which comes with a more fuel-efficient, turbocharged inline six cylinder engine. The “L” designation indicates it’s also a stretched or long-wheelbase body edition. The 127 mm (5-inches) added to its wheelbase is most noticeable, on the inside, as additional back-seat legroom.
Other than increased usage of the 8-speed automatic transmission the 7 Series is otherwise unchanged. The regular-wheelbase model is the 750i xDrive, while the 750Li xDrive, 760 Li and ActiveHybrid L are long-wheelbase. A high-performance Alpina B7 package can be added to the 750i xDrive models. The xDrive models are all-wheel drive.
The 750i and 750Li models use a twin-turbocharged 4.4-litre V8 engine with six-speed automatic transmission. The 760Li uses a twin-turbocharged 6.0-litre V12 engine with eight-speed automatic transmission. The ActiveHybrid 7 uses the twin-turbocharged V8 with electric motor and eight-speed automatic transmission; it uses the electric motors to assist the gasoline engine and cannot run on its battery alone, but will shut off the gasoline engine at idle for improved fuel economy. The Alpina B7 uses the twin-turbocharged 4.4-litre V8 but tuned to 500 horsepower, mated to an Alpina-specific six-speed sport automatic transmission.
Features on the 750i xDrive include 18-inch alloy wheels, four-zone automatic climate control, speed-sensitive power steering, adaptive LED brake lights, adaptive automatic bi-xenon headlamps with washers and cornering lights, front and rear fog lights, heated mirrors, rain-sensing wipers with heated washer nozzles, electromechanical parking brake with hold function, front and rear Park Distance Control, tire pressure monitoring system, front knee airbags, active front head restraints, power-folding auto-dimming mirrors, Comfort Access with pushbutton start, auto-dimming rearview mirror, ambiance lighting, dynamic cruise control, power sunroof, heated multifunction three-spoke leather-wrapped steering wheel with power tilt and telescopic column, soft-close trunk lid, garage door opener, “leatherette” dash pad, heated 16-way Nappa leather seats with driver’s side memory, heated outboard rear seats, five-passenger seating, DVD/MP3 stereo with hard disc storage, USB port, iPod interface, Bluetooth connectivity, and voice-controlled hard disc-based navigation system.
