The Porsche Boxster and Boxster S are all-new for 2005 and are now in their second generation. Engines are more powerful, but offer better fuel efficiency; new five- and six-speed manual transmissions have shorter gear changes, and the Tiptronic S gearbox has been upgraded. Variable-ratio steering is standard, and the steering column tilts and telescopes. Wheels and tires are larger and have been upgraded, while Stability Management becomes standard equipment. The Boxster also features head-protecting airbags, the first production roadster to do so.

Sharing almost 55 per cent of its parts with the 911 Carrera, the Boxster is 25 mm wider than the 2004 model it replaces. New exterior styling cues include larger flared wheel arches, a new front surround, larger air intakes in front and side, new rear surround, new door handles, new spoiler, and redesigned headlights and taillights. The cockpit has been redesigned, with a restyled dash, new seats, new steering wheel and upgraded upholstery.

Rear lighting has been enhanced, with three separate chambers and a graphic distinction between red and white areas for an improved rear light signature in the dark. The third brake light now features 18 LEDs.

The new Boxster’s suspension uses lighter, stiffer components and new springs, shock absorbers and anti-roll bars. Both models come with cross-drilled brake rotors, and the S can be optioned with composite ceramic brakes. While engine displacement remains the same, the 2.7-litre engine moves from 225 to 240 hp, while the 3.2-litre increases from 258 and 280 hp, partly from a redesigned intake manifold and larger exhaust. A new, high-efficiency water pump moves more liquid, but is lighter in weight than that used on the 2004, and allows for the installation of a more compact oil/water heat exchanger.

Overall, Porsche claims that 80 per cent of the 2005 model’s parts and components are not shared with the 2004.

With so many changes under the skin, the new models are more aerodynamic, providing higher top speeds and better road-holding capabilities. The Boxster accelerates from zero to 97 km/h in less than six seconds, while the Boxster S does it in 5.2 seconds.

The Boxster is built in Zuffenhausen, Germany and Uusikaupunki, Finland.
